Ray Johnson of Erick, Oklahoma, was declared missing in action in September of 1950, and his remains have been identified and returned to his family.
Ray was born on October 28, 1929 in Erick, Oklahoma, the son of Gilbert A. Johnson and Lucia Johnson. Upon graduating from Erick High School, he joined the military in September of 1948. He was ranked Sergeant and served in Company C, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. Historians at the Defense POW/ MIA Account Agency reported that on September 1, 1950, Sergeant Johnson was reported missing in action after the enemy attacked his unit’s position near Changyong, South Korea. Unknown remains were discovered near this area, and after 75 years, they have been confirmed to be Sergeant Johnson.
Ray is joined in rest by his parents and his brother, Leon Johnson. He is survived by his sister, Treva Mann, and nieces: Trudy Brannon, Martha Labus and Jeanne Harrison.
There will be a memorial service held on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 11:00am, in the Chapel at Hillside Christian Church (6100 S. Soncy Rd). Burial to follow at Llano Cemetery with full military honors.
The family is forever grateful for the Army’s diligence to never give up on identifying Ray’s remains and giving his sister the gift of knowing where her brother was all these years.
