Richard Craig “Rick” Hayes, 67, life was tragically cut short on August 5, 2026 following a multi-vehicle collision leaving behind countless memories, endless laughter, and a legacy of kindness that will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

Services will be at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, with Lance Herrington officiating. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Rick was born on November 14, 1958, in Knox City, Texas, to Kathleen and John Hayes. He loved the Lord and grew up with a quiet spirit, but anyone fortunate enough to truly know him quickly discovered that behind his reserved nature was a razor-sharp wit, an infectious laugh, and a heart that never met a stranger. He had a remarkable gift for making people smile, often with a perfectly timed one-liner delivered so casually you’d find yourself laughing long after he’d walked away.

In 1981, Rick met the love of his life, Lori. Their love story spanned decades before they married on December 15, 1995, beginning a beautiful partnership that lasted nearly 31 years. Together, they built a home overflowing with love, laughter, and through the years adopted more than 20 beloved Pekingese “babies.” While they never had children of their own, those little four-legged family members wanted for absolutely nothing—and everyone knew who really ran the house.

Family meant everything to Rick. Whether it was a birthday, holiday gathering, or simply an excuse to spend time together, he was there. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of home. He loved traveling with Lori, especially their treasured trips to Santa Fe, where they made memories that will forever be cherished.

Rick also had a lifelong love of music. Whether it was rocking out at a live ’70s concert or listening to classic country tunes, music was the soundtrack to a life well lived.

For 23 years, Rick proudly worked at Total Safety, where he found more than a career—he found another family. His coworkers affectionately called him “Tío,” a title that reflected the respect, affection, and camaraderie he shared with everyone around him. He loved going to work because of the people beside him, and they loved him just as much.

Rick was preceded in death by his beloved brother, John Hayes; his father-in-law, Bob Hunnicutt; his maternal grandparents; and his paternal grandparents.

He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Lori Hayes; his parents, Kathleen and John Hayes of Amarillo; his sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Dennis Beene of Amarillo; his mother-in-law, Nedra Hunnicutt of Channing; along with their six fur babies, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and more friends than anyone could possibly count.

Rick’s absence leaves a space that cannot be filled. The world feels a little quieter, a little dimmer, without his light in it. But those who knew him will forever carry his laughter, his generosity, his loyalty, and the reminder that life is meant to be enjoyed with the people you love.
