With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Charles “Robert” Coombes on June 4, 2026, at the age of 85 in Amarillo, Texas. Charles "Bob" was born September 29, 1940, in Pampa, Texas, to AP and LaVerne Coombes.
After graduating from high School, Bob joined the Navy and became an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam war. There began his love of flying. After obtaining his pilot license, he became a flight instructor and even taught a couple of his relatives to fly. He did crop dusting, flew aerial banners, and eventually acquired four airplanes of his own, including a vintage 1937 Biplane.
He began a 34-year career as manager in the marketing department at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
He married Judy Gumm in 1969. They were happily married for 51 years until Judy passed in 2020. They always had horses and enjoyed trail riding in the mountains.
From the time he was a toddler, his best friends were his animals. He rode horses by the time he could walk - starting with Scooter and Lightfoot and then many others. He loved calf roping and steer riding and was a regular participant in the local rodeos. As much as he could manage, he was never without a dog, beginning with Red - then Pearl and Wookie and lastly his faithful friend Lacey, with many others in between. He loved spending time later in life at 7 Star Horse Therapy.
Bob had a love of shooting. His dad was an instructor, and Bob won several awards in 4-H during his school years.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Judy Coombes; his mother, LaVerne Coombes; his father, A P Coombes; and his nephews, Daniel and Joshua Coombes.
He is survived by his stepson, Rusty Theobald; daughter-in-law, Ronda Theobald; grandsons, Reese and Dalton Theobald, along with their wives and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Alice Lindvay of Amarillo; brother, Pete Coombes of Amarillo; sister, Jackie Harper of Pampa; and his best friend and nephew, Sam Palmer; along with various nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 4:00 P.M., Monday, June 15, 2026, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ussery Roan. The nurses loved Bob and he also loved them.
