Susan Scott Smith Stephens

Nov 24, 1954 — Oct 4, 2026

Susan Scott Smith Stephens went to be with the Lord on October 4, 2026. She was born on November 24, 1954 to Glen and Judy Smith in Houston, Texas.

A Celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Christ's Community Fellowship Church in Vega. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo.

At a young age Susan fell in love with the mountains and horses. That carried through her life. She attended Texas Tech and was studying Animal Science when she met the love of her life, Mike Stephens. After a little bit of a rocky start, they had a whirlwind romance and married one year later on June 4, 1977 in Houston, Texas. From that point forward, they were equally yoked. Susan grew to have a great passion for ranching and assisting her husband in the ranching industry. She was great with horses, could start a colt under saddle, taught riding lessons, and pursued excellence in everything she did.

She loved the Lord and was strong in her faith. She had a great love of the outdoors and loved to travel. She hiked almost every 14,000 foot peak in Colorado and was especially proud of her accomplishment of completing the Colorado Trail, a 486 mile long-distance wilderness trail stretching from Denver to Durango, Colorado. She was a master gardener and loved working in her garden with her plants. She traveled to Israel twice, Scotland, and Ireland. She cherished her trips to Israel where she was baptized in the Jordan River, which had great meaning in her life. She was very knowledgeable of scripture and lived it out in her everyday life.

Her life was filled with passion for serving Jesus Christ her savior and others. She put the Lord first, followed by her husband Mike.

In her later years, she grew to have an even deeper passion for the study of scripture with her life group and sharing the gospel with all those she came in contact with. Her greatest desire was to lead people to Jesus.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Winston Glenn Smith and Julia Bell Stubbs; and her sister, Kathryn Smith.

Susan is survived by her husband, Mike Stephens; cousins, Lea Bertsch and husband Wayne Bertsch, David Stubbs, Hank Bratt, and Nancy Bratt.
