Ted Maynard Shumate, age 89, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2026, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Bob Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Ted was born to Iva and Ella Shumate on August 12, 1937, in Hays, North Carolina. He grew up in North Carolina but loved spending time with family in West Virginia as he grew up.
Ted left home as a young man and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served for just over four years as an airman. During this time in the Air Force, he met his wife, Billie Jean Duncan Shumate. They married in March 1960, after he was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
Ted and Billie Jean (Jeannie) began their family and raised three children. Ted also began his career as an insurance salesman, where he was very successful and worked his way up into District Management. His life insurance career continued for over thirty years. Ted loved people; he never met a stranger. He was a genuinely kind man who was also quick-witted and loved to make people smile and laugh.
After Ted retired from the life insurance business, he started his own business picking up and delivering prescription medications for Sunscript Pharmacy. Deliveries were all around the Texas Panhandle. He found that he loved traveling around the Panhandle so much that he bought a motor home. Therefore, when he was not doing prescription deliveries, he and Jeannie began to take their motor home out and traveled around the U.S.A. This became his passion as he loved seeing God’s beautiful country.
After Jeannie passed away in 2011, Ted met and remarried to Sandy McFather Shumate on August 20, 2011, Ted shared his passion for travel with Sandy, and they began their travels all over the U.S.A. They especially loved travelling back to North Carolina and West Virginia, where they would visit family and go back to Ted’s childhood home, school, and church.
When they were no longer able to travel, they loved the simple moments in life like sitting on their front porch, drinking coffee, rocking and watching TV. Most importantly just being by each other’s side; these were the moments he cherished. Ted’s love for his wife, family, country, and God was never in question, and his love was deep and genuine.
Ted’s final days were spent at The Garden’s of Amarillo, where he shared his love for people by making them laugh and participating in activities. He would dance to the oldies like Elvis and sing hymns with the staff and other residents.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Iva and Ella Shumate; wife, Billie Jean Shumate; granddaughter, Amanda Shumate, and grandsons, Derrick Shumate and Daxton Shumate. He was also preceded in death by his two sisters and brother of North Carolina.
Ted is survived by his wife, Sandy McFather Shumate; his daughters, Donna Shumate and Deana Riley and husband Scott Riley. He is also survived by his son, William Shumate; grandson, Brandon Riley and wife Danielle; granddaughter, Ashley Longbine and husband Terry; grandson, Devvin Shumate and wife Kristen; Bo Shumate and wife Nicole.
