Thomas (Tom) Dixon Maynard, beloved brother, son, cousin, and friend was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 1, 2025.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 6, 2025 at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Tom was the son of John and Virginia Maynard of Amarillo, Texas, and he spent his childhood in Amarillo.
Tom graduated from Amarillo High School in May 1974. He was an outstanding football player at AHS playing both defensive end and offensive tackle, as well as being an excellent student. Tom attended Stanford University from 1974-1978, and he went on to play another four years of college football. Many of his Amarillo High and Stanford friends remained close to him up to the day of his departure and he dearly cherished those friendships.
At Stanford, Tom earned a BS degree in Industrial Engineering and he went on to hold positions at Maywood, Inc. of Amarillo, as well as at Trammell Crow, Texas Instruments, and he ultimately founded his own commercial real estate firm in San Antonio, TX. Tom also carved out some years of his busy career to attend Dallas Seminary along with working for Campus Crusade for Christ at both Ohio State University and Arizona State University. The seeds for his service in these ministries were planted in Young Life, where he served on staff for a summer at Frontier Ranch in Colorado. Tom’s joyful passion for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with students was the highlight of his life and a great love.
In many ways, his favorite place on earth was the family cabin in Tres Ritos, New Mexico. He loved the mountains, hiking, fishing, and skiing where he could enjoy the peacefulness of God's creation as well as fellowship with family and friends. One of his favorite questions over that past few years was, “When do you think we can go back up to Tres Ritos?” One of our favorite mountain memories of Tom was when he came down Bambi, the bunnie slope at Sipapu Ski Valley, and forgetting to stop at the bottom, he skied right into the Rio Pueblo. Needless to say, that was his last run of the day.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister Kathy Swick and her husband Bert, his brother John and his wife Elise, his sister Martha Maynard along with many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. Tom was beloved all over the country with dear friends from coast to coast, especially his brothers in the Zeta Psi fraternity at Stanford. Most recently Tom also developed a great affection for his friends at the Chandler Estates of Morningside Ministries and spent some of his happiest days there with a grand community of residents. He will be missed dearly by all.
We wish to especially thank a few of his caregivers, who worked tirelessly in their skilled ways to love Tom—Ben, Gilbert, Vanessa, Maria, Silvia and Cynthia Butler as an enormous help to us all. They were truly gifted along with a number of others who helped him out. Thank you all!
In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be given to Young Life Amarillo (giving.younglife.org/Amarillo).
