Tim Forrest, 82, of Amarillo, went to be with his Lord on May 8, 2026. Tim was born on August 18, 1943, in Denton, Texas, and grew up in Weatherford and Austin, Texas, with a love for the outdoors and many adventures with his older brother, Larry. Family reunions and gatherings through the years have been highlighted by Larry and Tim adventures (and misadventures). Tim played tennis in high school, making the state finals. He also loved hunting arrowheads and other artifacts with his uncle, Carr Hawley, and left an extensive collection.
Tim attended the University of Texas at Austin for a time and was a lifelong Longhorn fan. He moved to Amarillo for the Bible Training Work, where he fell in love with and married Mary Lou Gipson. He graduated from Amarillo College with his associates degree. Tim and Mary Lou were married for 43 years before Mary Lou passed away in 2008. During their partnership, they shepherded their three kids: Vali, Teri and Joel through tennis, softball and many other school activities. Tim coached softball and other sports and always made it a priority to be at as many events as possible, even while working hard to provide for the family.
During that time, Tim lent his incredible bass voice and musical talent to the well-known acapella quartet, Psalms 4. Psalms 4 traveled across the country sharing the gospel and produced eight albums that are favorites among his church tradition. The group traveled thousands of miles together, often including their families on the trips. For more than 50 years, Tim gathered with his quartet brothers, Lyndon Latham, Ron Loe and Pete Talley, every Thursday night to practice and perfect their music.
Tim was a master machinist and could build anything out of metal. For many years, he worked as a machinist for Texaco in Amarillo and then ended his career working for Phillips in Borger before retiring. Tim lost Mary Lou in 2008. He embodied the spirit of his wedding vows of, “for better or worse and in good times and bad,” as he cared for her at the end of her life.
Tim was alone for five years before meeting Nancy Wilcox in the laundry room of the LaTour condominium where he had moved. Tim and Nancy married in 2013, and their families are grateful they have had 13 years of loving each other well. They developed a life of service and dedication to their families. They delivered Meals On Wheels weekly for years and frequently volunteered at their church, as well as attended family events.
Tim’s greatest joy was having his family together and cooking for them. He was famous for his potato salad, mashed potatoes and, especially, for his chicken and rice, which is a favorite among his grandkids. Just like his portion sizes (he could only make the potato salad in a giant Tupperware bowl), Tim loved extravagantly. He made Christmas an event and took joy in building massive stockings full of candy, fruit, gum, and scratch-off lottery tickets. Every male in the family got a pocketknife and the women and girls all got lotion from Bath & Body Works. The stockings had to be returned so that they could be filled again next year.
For 32 years, Tim has been better known as “Paw” to his grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Paw loved being with the grandkids and loved to take them fishing at Turkey, Texas, striper fishing at Lake Texhoma – or anywhere else he had a chance. He loved attending their school events, games, recitals and graduations and now, weddings and work celebrations. He loved watching them grow and loved to celebrate with them.
Tim will be remembered by his many friends and loved ones for loving his family lavishly, his incredible bass voice and his fierce loyalty to the Texas Longhorns (which earned a “Horns Down” from the rest of the family). His greatest accomplishment was giving his life to the Lord, Jesus Christ. Through his music and his life, Tim left a legacy of faith.
Tim is survived by his wife of 13 years, Nancy Forrest; children, Vali Jenkins and her husband, Jeff, of Amarillo; Teri Campbell and her husband, Jim Bret, of Lubbock; and Joel Forrest of Prosper, Texas; brother, Larry Forrest, of Dripping Springs, Texas; grandchildren: Jake Jenkins; Gracie Bandy and her husband, Jakh, and great-grandchild, Wilhem; and Jeb Jenkins; Cash Campbell and his wife, Mallory; Cooper Campbell; and Bri Forrest, Bella Forrest and Barlow Forrest. His extended family also included stepsons Matt Wilcox and his wife, Jessica; Eric Warshauer and his husband, Matt; and Stuart Wilcox and his wife, Brittany; six step-grandchildren: Emma Williams and her husband, Patrick; Andi Wilcox, Evi Wilcox, Joseph Wilcox, Dorian Wilcox, and Tony Wilcox; and a long list of nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, his parents, Charles and Kate Forrest and a grandson, William Reid Jenkins.
