Velton Dewey Hughes, 76, of Dumas, TX passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025.
Velton was born September 29, 1948 in Dumas, TX to Claude and Rosie Hughes. He graduated from Dumas High School then moved to Ft. Worth, TX where he became the manager of the electronics department at the largest K-Mart in the DFW area. Velton enjoyed playing tennis in his younger years and loved going to Las Vegas to gamble and watch shows. He also enjoyed travelling to New York to celebrate New Years Eve in Times Square to watch the ball drop in person.
Velton enjoyed life and had a way of making people smile and feel “seen.” He always had a kind word for everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony, Charlie, and Walter Lasater; parents, Claude and Rosie Hughes; and brother-in-law, O.F. Goldsmith.
Velton is survived by his cherished sister, Shirley Goldsmith of Amarillo, TX; his niece, Shelly Black of Amarillo, TX; great-nephew, Brayden Black of Austin, TX; and many special cousins and friends to include Mat Harbert and wife Maa, Mariah Tatum and husband Steven, Janise Harbert, Brenda LaCour, Arlene McAlister, and Frances Guest.
No services will be held per his wishes. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
