Virginia J. Stack Thornton , 100, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday April 12, 2026.
Visitation will be from 6-7:00 PM, Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount. Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM, Friday. April 17, 2026 at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Mom was born in Amarillo on January 12, 1926, the 5th child of Ethel Ledford Stack and Hal Stack. She was the youngest of the 4 Stack sisters that were very active in the Amarillo social and community services scene for decades. The sisters adored their older brother Billy. He died in March of 1944. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1944 and attended Amarillo College and the University of Texas. Virginia married George C. Thornton on October 14, 1948, in Amarillo. Mom was active in the Junior League of Amarillo for many years, and kept busy with the activities of her children – football, baseball, choir, and homework. She had dear friends she kept in touch with throughout her life.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, and her siblings William “Billy” C Stack, Martha Nell Miner, Mary Stack Ware, and Margaret Jane “Peggy” Stack. She is survived by her children Martha Walton and spouse Stephen, George Clay Thornton and wife Rebecca , William S. Thornton and wife Meg , Michael A. Thornton and wife Annie, as well as grandchildren Dan Walton and wife Anna, Richard Walton and wife Dana, Tiffany Bunnell, Brandon Slay and wife Tina, William Thornton and wife Yandi, Erin Donley and spouse Rob, and Matthew Thornton. Mom also has 15 great grandchildren she loved hearing about. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at The Ware for their loving care they showed Mom.
