W.C. “Chick” Russell passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love, following a lengthy recovery from a fall in 2023.
A service honoring Chick’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd 11:00am, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79109.
Born on June 15, 1934, in Megargel, Texas, Chick was the cherished son of C.O. and Iva Mullen Russell. He grew up in Stinnett and Borger, where he built lifelong friendships and graduated from Borger High School. His love of sports carried him to Frank Phillips Junior College, where he played baseball, before completing his degree at West Texas State University in 1959.
Chick devoted his professional life to accounting, beginning his career as a CPA at Brown Graham and Glover in Hereford. Through dedication, integrity, and genuine care for others, he rose to become President of the firm. He later moved to Amarillo, where he continued serving colleagues and clients he deeply appreciated, ultimately retiring—somewhat reluctantly—at the age of 88.
Outside of work, Chick embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He loved the outdoors, golf, hunting, camping, gardening, and woodworking. A true supporter of WT athletics, he cheered on men’s and women’s teams for many years, traveling to championships near and far. He even found joy in becoming a devoted spectator of Cross Country—proving he could make room in his heart for any sport.
Chick is survived by the love of his life, Nancy (Godwin) Russell—his wife and partner in all things for 55 years. He leaves behind his children: Vicki (Don) Paavilainen, James (Kyla) McDowell, Eleise (Jimmy) Traylor, and Charles (Connie) McDowell; along with 10 grandchildren and 7 great‑grandchildren, all of whom brought him immeasurable pride and joy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to West Texas A&M Athletics—an organization that brought Chick so much happiness over the years.
