A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 6th at HIS Church. Graveside burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Susan was born on December 25, 1952, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Deak and Ann Burkett. Susan married Jim Shankle in June of 1972 in Amarillo where they lived and raised three children.

Susan always had a smile on her face and always had a very positive attitude toward life. She was lover and a rescuer of four-legged creatures and was an active volunteer with Gracie’s Project. She was also a huge sports enthusiast. If not attending in person, her televisions could always be found tuned to ESPN, the PGA Tour or NFL Sunday.

Susan took pride in having an open-door home. There are few people in Amarillo that do not have a memory of the house on Hatfield. This house was a second home for several and Susan was a second Mom to many.

Susan was the only girl in a four-brother home. She always had a special bond with her brothers and one might say even she had all of the control. Growing up she was nicknamed Bullet by her father. This came from Susan punching boys and running away faster than a speeding bullet.

Family was everything to Susan. She was so proud of her three kids and all of her grandchildren. She was the biggest cheerleader of all things for all of them. Over the past several years, Susan made countless trips to Dallas to see her children and grandchildren. She was present for all holidays and all sporting events – being the loudest in the stands. If she wasn’t able to attend in person, she could be found on her phone or in front of her tv watching the game live stream.

Susan was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her brother Mike and her Mother and Father, Deak & Ann. She is survived by her son Shane Shankle and wife Stephanie of Colleyville, Texas, her daughter Cortney Reed and husband Chris of Amarillo, Texas, her daughter Karisti Julia and husband Luis of Richardson, Texas. She had six grandchildren: Katelynn, Ava, Sam, Reaganne, Gracie & Channing. Three brothers, Randy, Jeff & Adam, their wives, as well as several nieces and nephews. And her fur baby Lucy.

All friends and loved ones are welcomed to join the Family on Sunday from 4:00 – 5:00 at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home for a visitation.

  1. Just found out about my beautiful friend and neighbor.
When we moved into our house on Hatfield 25 yrs ago she was the first to welcome us into the neighborhood . And we were friends. My favorite time with Susan was rescuing dogs cats Or anything with four legs around our neighborhood. The funniest thing we did together i will never forget i arrived home from teaching 30 kids about 3:30 in the afternoon i was exhausted when I and saw a lost dog across the street from my house. I walked towards him and the dog started limping away from me. As soon as I turned around Susan drove up and opened her car door and said “Jump In”. We drove around the block, called animal control, the dog had tags we could hear jingle so we knew he would get back to his loved ones. As soon as we would catch up to the dog he would run and get away. Picture this Susan and I driving, stopping, getting back in the car driving getting out of the car running down the street, navigating in between houses, laughing every time he got away During this adventure with Susan was backing up to turn around and she hit a pickup on our street , she was horrified and said “Oh Bleep Im going to jail for chasing this dog,” I knew the neighbor who owns the pickup and I told her they will not be mad at her and of course they were not, and they were so kind to Susan about the accident. After our brush with the Pickup animal control finally got there. We told them what we knew and counted on them
to rescue the dog. I followed up with Susan that evening I had found a video in my ring app that showed video of Animal Control chasing and catching the dog we were chasing plus a video of Susan in her car driving up and down our streets looking for the dog And a video of me running down the alley in my boots with a caption Does anyone know these two ladies. I went down the street to show Susan the videos and we could not stop laughing. I will miss her so much. This is the time of year we start seeing everyone on our street come out, walk, do yard work and talk to each other . Susan was a big part of that .Every time i would pass her house she would be outside or in her kitchen with her garage door open I would honk and wave if i didn’t she would let me know about it . I loved that about her I will miss her everyday and every time I pass her house i will still honk.

  3. We have been neighbors of Susans for many years. She always had a smile and most of the time a story about our block (good or bad). Susan’s house was the place to go on Halloween because she always gave out a can coke in addition to candy. We will truly miss seeing her and doing our normal honk and wave as we drive by. Heaven just got a “one of a kind”. Prayers to all of the family.
