Alton Eugene “Gene” Proffitt, 88, of Amarillo, TX passed away on July 30, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, August 14, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Private burial was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Gene was born in Quanah, TX on December 31, 1932, to Cloe B and Noah Proffitt.

He graduated from Phillips High School in 1950 along with the Love of His Life, Louise. Gene was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. After returning from his service to his country, Gene & Louise were married on May 18, 1955, in Phillips, TX. Gene worked for Phillips Petroleum Co, Hill Chemical, and Cominco American. He became a partner in Bison Petroleum in Amarillo, TX in 1982 and retired in 1996.

Gene was a member of Paramount Baptist Church where he was the teacher of King’s Men Sunday School class. Throughout his life, Gene enjoyed bowling, fishing, golf, and woodworking. Gene & Louise traveled much of the United States together, driving where they pleased. He loved spending time with his grandkids and great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Louise; their son, Alton Eugene Proffitt Jr.; daughter, Stephanie Messenger; and his sister, Wesley B Ingram.

He is survived by a daughter, Teresa Prater and husband Joe; son-in-law, Mike Messenger; four grandchildren, Monica Smith and husband Keith, Devin Prater and wife Stephanie, Andrew Messenger, and Angela Messenger; and two great-granddaughters, Whitley and Harper Smith, all of Amarillo, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to your favorite pet rescue organization.

  1. I worked with Gene at Bison Petroleum Corp. for years before his retirement. I loved and enjoyed working with Gene and admired his loving family. Gene was a wonderful caring, calm and great man. He was very proud of his family & rightfully so. We kept in contact thru the years. Blessing to his adoring family. I too will miss him!

  2. Teresa, my heart goes out to you,and my prayers are with you.
    James and I loved Gene and Louise and enjoyed ma y hours of fun and laughs as we played Spinners together for many years.
    I know how lonely he was,we talked on phone many times.
    When I lost my James he tried to comfort me with note and phone call.
    James loved going to his Sunday School Class. Very wonderful teacher.
    He was a man to be admired in every area of his life!

  3. I’ve known this man since I was 10 yrs old and he nevered aged. Teresa I’m very sorry for your loss. I know he will be missed.. Prayers for your family.
