Betty “Jean” Compton Harris

Betty Jean (Compton) Harris, 91, of Amarillo, Texas, died Monday, March 25th, 2024, Amarillo, Texas.

She was born on July 1

st

, 1932, to, Iley Compton and Ethel “Bubba” (Hullum) Compton in Childress, Texas.

Jean was a graduate of Childress High School in 1950 and married the love of her life John Terry Harris of Lazare, Texas in a garden ceremony at the home of her grandmother on August 29

th

, 1952.

Jean and John had four children, Vicki Lynn Perkins, Spencer Jay Harris, Terri Denise (Harris) Maynard, John Terry Harris Jr.

She worked in and out of the home, always ready to support her children’s projects and ready to volunteer for school and civic needs.

Jean was an avid social Bridge player and loved to compete with her family in card games and dominoes – perhaps celebrating her victories a little too strongly over those she loved the most!  Jean loved spending time in the mountains of New Mexico where the family spent many summers and she and John built a cabin she filled with memories, laughter, jellybeans, and her beloved collection of coyotes figurines.

Jean is survived by: her husband, John Harris of their home in Amarillo; children, Vicki Lynn Perkins, of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Terri Denise (Harris) Maynard, and husband Tom of Loveland, Colorado, John Terry Harris Jr. and wife Kristin of Amarillo, Texas;  grandchildren, Chanda (Wayne) Kennemer, Crystal (Michael) Kluver, April (Chris) Jones, Ben (Kara) Maynard, Sarah (Jahar) Staples, Mason Arndt, Reid Maynard, Josh Harris; great-grandchildren, Price, Emmie, Charlotte, Liam, Beth, Ava, Asher, Siersha, Aiden, Jordan, Atlas; siblings, Mike Compton of Wichita Falls, Tony (Carol) Compton of Sherman, Texas, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by: infant Spencer Jay Harris; her parents (Iley Compton and Ethel “Bubba” (Hullum) Compton, siblings, Iley Compton Jr., Peggy (Compton) Williams, Jerry Compton.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2024, at Hillside Christian Church, 6100 South Soncy Road, Amarillo, Texas with Pastor Greg Corona officiating.  Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m., at Kirkland Cemetery in Kirkland, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to Enhabit Home Health & Hospice of Amarillo, Texas.
