Betty Lou Sharp, née Dickey, of Amarillo passed away on Jan. 24, 2021 at the age of 89 (non-Covid related). She died surrounded by her family that adored her.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church Sanctuary in Amarillo at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Betty Lou was born in Tulia, TX on July 29, 1931. Upon high school graduation, she married Richard “Dick” Sharp in 1948. Dick was a lifelong milkman, and they were married for 65 years.

She was preceded in death by husband, Dick; parents, Cal and Mabel Dickey; two brothers; one sister; son, Danny; and son-in-law, Steve Sterquell.

She is survived by son, Rickey and wife Becky Sharp; daughter, Marshallette Sterquell; son, Randy and wife Stacy Sharp; daughter, Missy and husband Bryan Garner, all of Amarillo, and son, Kent and wife Terri Sharp of Celina, TX. Grandchildren, who called her “Nanny” are Cerissa Martinez, Melessa Jones, Steve Sterquell II, Libby Bunn, Meridith Genuchi, Austin Sharp, Troy Sharp, McKay Anderson, Amy Donohoo, Jessica Harbour, Jenny Ramos, Gentry Roach, and Travis Sharp, plus 27 great-grandchildren.

Throughout her life, she was devoted to her children and grandchildren and loved them all dearly. She was an amazing cook, famous for her desserts. There was always something sweet in the oven, and her chocolate pie was award-winning. Betty Lou was an avid football fan and especially cheered on the Dallas Cowboys. She and the women of the family learned to needlepoint together, and they enjoyed an annual Christmas needlepoint ornament exchange that began in 1979. When the children were out of the house, Betty Lou worked at an Orthopedic Surgeon’s office, as a teacher’s aid at Will Rogers Elementary School, and at Randy’s SAS Shoes.

A special thank you to the staff at Harrington / Moore Assisted Living and the nurses and doctors at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the First Baptist Church Amarillo Music Department at 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, Texas 79101.

  2. My condolences to her family. I worked with Betty at the dental offices of Shackleford, Barron and Bonner during the early 1970’s, and I loved her dearly. She was one of the nicest and finest people I have ever known. She was also one of the best cake bakers on the planet. She will be missed.

  7. Rickey, we are sorry to read of the loss of your mom. Both of us having been there, we know of the void left when moms so influential in our lives leave…temporarily…for a better place.
