Bettye Gene Porterfield of Amarillo, Texas passed away peacefully on January 10, 2022.

Memorial services will be Friday, January 14, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. at the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Paul Frederiksen officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Bettye was born on March 30, 1940, in Sweetwater, Texas to Ila Bess and Weldon “Billy” Porterfield. Her daddy was a Methodist minister so they moved often and she experienced life all over Texas including Blackwell, Big Spring, Amarillo, Gruver, Canadian and Post. She married the father of her children in 1957 while still attending high school in Post, Texas. From there, she began to enjoy life from not only Post, but also Lubbock, Houston, Slaton, and Canyon.

Bettye was a strong, independent woman, raising four boys on her own while attending nursing school in the late 1960s.  She graduated from West Texas State University and spent the rest of her working years serving others as a registered nurse in Amarillo. She cared deeply for the people she served in the healthcare industry, but her passion was her God, her Family, and her Friends. She loved and nurtured us all to the best of her ability for nearly her entire life. She will be endearingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Bettye was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she had been active in the choir and handbell choir.  Bettye was feisty and lived the life of a true redhead. She loved her family dearly, and was dearly loved by all of her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Horace “Hody” Porterfield.

Bettye is survived by sons Stacy Brewer and wife, Gale, Jimmy Brewer, Jody Brewer, and Scott Brewer and wife, Casey, all of Amarillo, sisters, Ann Haire of Slaton, Texas, Welda Miller (David) of Athens, Texas, and Patti Hill (John) of Savannah, Texas.  She is also survived by grandchildren, Tony Brewer (Allison), Arlie Brewer, Luke Brewer (Arra), John Brewer (Addison), Alexis Pertl (Andrew), Cody Biggs (Katie), Whitney Brewer, Matthew Brewer, Dylan Diaz, King Diaz, Maggie Brewer, Liam Brewer and great-grandchildren, Nix, Adlee, Ford, Porter, Raleigh, Corven, Ash, Cole, and Joanna June.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Harrison, Amarillo, Texas, or the West Texas Alzheimer’s Association.
