On December 24, 2020, our loving Lord welcomed Billy Joe Broaddus, 87, into Heaven’s Gates. He was a father of three and friend to many. Billy Joe was born on May 2, 1933 in Amarillo, Texas. He was raised in Wildorado, Texas and graduated from Wildorado Highschool in 1951. He was a fifth-generation cattleman and farmed throughout his life. He, along with Jacque, raised one son, Weldon, and two daughters, Judy and Nancy.

Billy Joe was passionate about numbers. From pricing cattle, to solving Sudoku puzzles, Billy could always be found figurin’ something. He enjoyed his old friends and making new ones; he never met a stranger. In his younger years, Billy enjoyed team roping, water skiing, snow skiing, and he never outgrew his love of fishing. Billy Joe loved spending time dancing and telling stories. On any given day, you could find him spinning tales like a wagon wheel.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie, his father, John, his one sister, Geneva, his three brothers, Kenneth, Stanley, and John Levi, his son, Weldon, and grandson, Sheldon.

He is survived by his two daughters, Judy and Gary of Corinth, Texas along with Nancy and Russell of Waimea, Kauai, seven grandchildren, Josh, Tess, Derrick, Luke, CJ, Jericho, and J-Sea, and eleven great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved.

A graveside service will be held for close family and friends on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 1:00 pm, at Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega in Vega, TX. The family asks that guests practice safety guidelines and social distancing at all times. Viewing will be available at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Amarillo, TX from 10:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M., on Monday, December 28, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Milburn-Price Culture Museum in Vega, Texas.

  1. So very many memories regarding Billy Joe & the Broaddus Family. I started knowing them in 1964 when my Dad (Kenneth Holloway) was appointed County Extension Agent for Oldham County. Billy Joe & Dad became very close friends since the Broaddus Family was so engaged in 4-H, farming & ranching. Dad visited their home place often & many of those times I got to tag along. I can hear Billy Joe’s laugh even now as I reminisce about the many conversations I listened to from those visits. Billy Joe was a good neighbor to my in-laws Roger Morris, Jr & Beth Morris. They all enjoyed their friendship & neighboring that resulted in lots of good times & stories.
I hope the Broaddus Family will always know how we love each of them & pray The Lord’s Favor, Comfort, Peace & Love during this time of remembering Billy Joe. On behalf of the Holloway Family I submit these words. Lord Bless!!!

  2. I have special memories of my cousin Billy Joe Broaddus & his family. My mother, Frances Gravley, lived with his Grandmother when she was a young girl, even though she already had 10 kids & her husband had died a few years earlier. Each summer Mother would go out to her Uncle John & Aunt Fan’s farm. Such a good & sweet family. While Mother lived in Amarillo, Billy Joe would check on her & take her to visit with another cousin, often for lunch. Each time my husband Fred & I were close to Vega, we stopped & either visited or spent the night. Billy Joe was a dear cousin to me, & I’m thankful that I got to talk with him recently. I send our sympathy to Nancy & family and Judy & family & friends, So sad that we can’t come to the graveside service. We love you all. Fred & Sharon Selby

  3. Billy Joe was loved by so many! He was a great friend to me and my family and will be remembered fondly and missed dearly!

  4. Losing Bill in our lives will leave a void no one will ever fill. He has always been admired and loved, a very special family member in our family. i have gone many places with Bill and have never been any place that we didnt run into someone who knew Bill, and expressed their love and admiration for him in their lives. Bill is the only only person in my life that i knew could sit down with a perfect stranger and talk as if they knew each other for their entire life… Gods Angel that was shared with all of us has been called home. We love you Bill, our family will greatly miss you.

  5. Billy was the kindest man I ever met. He always was a friend. I will never forget when my son came home from the military and he was having one of his cookouts and there was a welcome home sign for my son on his fence. The world lost an amazing man and friend, but heaven gained an amazing angel!

  6. The best neighbor we could have! I have so many positive things to say about him….most of all my kids thought he was the best! He will be missed greatly 😢 Prayers for his daughters and family.

  7. I hardly know where to begin, perhaps pheasant hunting on the farm with my dad and Uncle Billy, or wanting to get up really early to ride the tractor to “help” him feed the cattle on what I am quite sure was one of the coldest mornings ever. Uncle Billy always made me feel welcome, even though I know his work could have been done a lot quicker if I hadn’t been tagging along. I enjoyed spending time with him on the farm, learning from him. He always greeted me with that warm smile and open arms. I cherish so much about “the good ole days” in fact when I was a child, my dream was grow up and live in Vega on a farm just like Aunt Jacque and Uncle Billy!! Because of Covid, I haven’t made it back to the Panhandle nearly as much as I should have but each time we got back we made sure to stop by and see him. He will be missed and he was loved immensely.

  8. My fondest memories of Uncle Billy are those when we were staying there on the farm for holidays and weekend visits. I admired his easy-going confidence, directness, and love of telling a good story. I remember card games and dominoes (42!) enveloped in laughter and the warmth of kin and hearth, and being so amazed when we went out into the fields at what he knew and how much he obviously loved that life. It seems an era is passing but we know these values, gifts and memories are eternal. My thoughts are prayers go out to everyone with whom Uncle Billy shared his life. We will be gathered there in spirit with you all at Memorial Park on Tuesday. Billy fought the good fight and now may he rest in peace.

  9. Billy had my heart! He didn’t sugarcoat any advice he gave me (asked for or not). I will remember the good times and laughs! Love you Billy Broaddus!
