Billy Myres Whitten, 81, of Memphis, TX passed away May 8th, 2022 after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill was born to Cecil and Ida Whitten on April 3, 1941, in Memphis, Texas.  Bill attended Memphis High School and graduated in 1959.  Bill graduated from West Texas State University in 1977.  Bill traveled with his job which took him all over Texas.  Bill realized that he wanted to go home.  He and Marilyn moved back to Memphis in 2011.

Bill was preceded in death by his father in 1996, his mother in 1997, and his brother Raymond in 2013.  He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hodges Whitten; brothers, Warren Whitten (wife Joan), and Randy Whitten (wife Brenda); nieces, Brakelle Purnell, Wendy Altman, and Lindsay Garcia; nephews, Jerry Whitten, and Brock Whitten; and multiple grand-nieces and nephews.

Bill married the love of his life, Marilyn Hodges, in 1978.  Together they had four children: son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Stacey Whitten of Georgetown, Texas; daughter, Brandi Whitten Peña of Sherman, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Christie and Lance Lair of McKinney, Texas; and son and daughter-in-law, Dee and Amber Yarbrough of Pacific, MO.

Bill (Grandpa) and Marilyn (Grandma) loved their grandchildren: Connor Whitten, Nicholas Myers Peña, Emma Whitten, Katie Peña, Maxwell Whitten, Tyler Lair, Trew Yarbrough, and Tong Tong Whitten.  They loved supporting their very active grandkids in choir or recital performances; baseball, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, and hockey games; and archery tournaments. They also enjoyed sharing frosty cokes on the porch.

In their retirement, Grandpa and Grandma loved going on fishing trips, Alaskan cruises, and playing the slots in Las Vegas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels program of Memphis, Texas or to the Future Farmers of America, Memphis High School.

  1. I have such fond memories of Mr. Bill from high school. He loved you and Christie so much. I asked Christie to give you a hug from me when she saw you. Love you to the moon and back and know that I treasure all that you and Mr. Bill did for me during my high school and college years. Tawni

  2. Continued prayers for all of you! We loved getting to know Bill. Such a sweet man that loved his family with all his heart!
