Carolyn Ann Ballard Hicks

Carolyn Ann Ballard Hicks, 87, of Amarillo, TX died Friday, August 11, 2023.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 14, 2023, at St. Stephen Church.  Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Gruver Cemetery in Gruver, TX.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Carolyn was born June 5, 1936, in the family farmhouse, in the Valley View Community, Northeast of Tulia, TX, to R.L. and Dorotha Landers Ballard.  She attended classes at the country school for 4 ½ years.  She attended school where she completed her 12 years of formal schooling.

Carolyn married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Hicks, on September 5, 1954, in the Hale Center Methodist Church.  Blessing their lives were children, Larry Lee Hicks, Bobby Dale Hicks, and Susan Gay Hicks.  The family moved to Plainview, TX in 1963, and to Gruver, TX in January of 1967.  Her final move was to Amarillo, TX in 2008.

She was baptized into First Baptist Church at Hale Center, TX, in a horse tank at the age of 6 years.  Carolyn attended Sunday school and church throughout her life.   She was a children’s Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School worker, youth group sponsor, and choir member.  She belonged to Young Homemaker’s Club in Hale Center, TX, bowling leagues, square dancing clubs, softball and volleyball teams, and served as president of Plainview Evening Lioness Club, she also was a long-time member of the Gruver Music Club, and the Hansford Hospice Volunteers.  She participated in fund raisers for various charities.

Carolyn loved all family members, family reunions, family gatherings at home, and traveling with her husband, children, and grandchildren.  She loved her great-grandchildren so much.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her infant sons, Perry Alan and David Layne Hicks; her parents; son, Larry Lee Hicks; her sister, Sharon Seagler; brother-in-law, Roger Mahagan; her beloved in-laws, Dorothy and Melvin Hicks; and her husband, Bobby Hicks.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Hicks Lancaster; son, Bobby Dale Hicks; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Hicks; brother-in-law, Stan Seagler; brother, Wayne Ballard and wife Patty; sister-in-law, Linda McFarrin and husband Joe; grandchildren, Brandea Hicks Allen and husband Mark, Chelsie Hicks Baker and husband Brandon, Amanda Lancaster and husband Niche Barboza, Austin Lancaster and wife Renae, and Jordan Hicks and wife Mary Beth; great-grandchildren, Max Wright, Matt Allen, Boone Baker, Wyatt Hicks, Logan Lancaster, Mallary Allen, Molly Allen, Cana Baker, and Clara Hicks; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 13, 2023, at the funeral home.
