Dennis was born November 3, 1923 on a farm near Spearman, Texas. He grew up in a family with one sister and five brothers. Following his studies at West Texas State in Canyon, he enlisted in the spring of 1942 in the Army Air Corp. After flight training in central and West Texas, he transitioned to the B26 Bomber. He was then stationed in Western Europe in 1944 and was pilot and commander of a B26 Bomber for forty-seven missions including the Battle of the Bulge. On his return from Europe in 1945, Dennis met the love of his life, Georgia Burleson, also of Spearman. They married on September 8, 1946 and celebrated seventy years of marriage before Georgia’s death in 2016.
Dennis and Georgia moved to Amarillo in 1946 as he began his seventy-two-year career with the Coble-Whittenburg family managing their ranching and farming operations in Texas and New Mexico. Eventually, he was able to realize a life-long dream of owning his own ranch in New Mexico. Dennis was also in church leadership through much of his life, and he and his wife mentored many young couples as they grew in their spiritual lives together. Additionally, Dennis and Georgia participated in numerous mission trips to Africa, South America, and Asia. They completed their service to the Lord in loving fellowship with the community of Paramount Baptist Church.
Dennis is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Judy Kern of Lubbock, Texas, and his daughter and son-in-law, Dennis Ann and Jim Strong of Hartsel, Colorado. Additionally, Dennis was blessed with grandson, Bart Kern of Lubbock, granddaughter and her husband, Barri and Jeff Whitaker of Lubbock, grandson and his wife, Evan and Cristina Strong of San Antonio, and granddaughter and her husband, Sarah Strong and Michael Kugler of Gunnison, Colorado.
