Donald Ray Abston

Donald Ray Abston, 88, of Amarillo, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024.

Services will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 22, 2024, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Bret McCasland, officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Don was born on August 2, 1935, to Edna Ruth and Hubert Alfred Abston in his grandparent’s farmhouse in Wilbarger County, Texas.   He graduated from Northside High School, Vernon, Texas.  He then attended and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in accounting and went on to earn his CPA certificate.

He met Glenda Simmons his senior year in high school and they were married on December 29, 1955. They cherished 65 years together.

Don served in the Texas National Guard, worked at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, Cornell and Company where he became a partner, served as vice president of Ponca Wholesale Mercantile Company, and then returned to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch and worked there until his retirement on April 30, 1998.

He was a member of Southwest Church of Christ for over 60 years where he served as a deacon and an elder.  He also volunteered with High Plains Children’s Home.

Don loved fishing with his cousins, friends and grandsons. His favorite times were spent with his family at holidays, family reunions, trips to the mountains, and with his close friends playing 42. He was cherished by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenda and his parents Hubert and Edna Ruth.

He leaves behind his sister, Frances (Robert) Baker; brother, Joe (Nancy) Abston; sister-in-law, Sharon (Mike) Miles; daughters, Karen Ann (Terry) West and Kathy Lynn (Rick) Spears; grandchildren, Drew (Heather) Spears; Levi (Meagan) West; Dr. Katelyn (Logan) Hopper; Jake (Bronwyn) Spears; great-grandchildren Shelby, Rylee, Jett, Brooklynn, Ellowyn and Quinn; niece, Marcie Cook; many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends he dearly loved including his very dear friend Mike Pacino.

Don was faithful to all and loved by many.  Our days on this earth will not be the same without him.

A special thank you from the family to his friends and caregivers at Park Place Towers, The Ware, and BSA Hospice of the Southwest.

The pallbearers for the service will be Drew Spears, Levi West, Logan Hopper, Jake Spears, Cody Cook, Ty Cook, and Jett Andersen.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 to 6:30 P.M., on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, and suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch,
