Elizabeth Lois “Betsy” McCampbell, 80, of Amarillo, TX passed away on July 17, 2022.

Betsy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend!

Betsy was born on May 28th, 1942, in Omaha, Nebraska to the Reverend Lewis and Elizabeth Koerselman. She lived most of her childhood in Elbow Lake, MN, and Tulia, TX. She graduated from Tulia High School and then graduated from West Texas State University and Texas A&M University.

Betsy taught at Palo Duro High School for 28 years, prior to retiring in 2001. She was incredibly proud to be a “Don!” Some of her longest and closest relationships were with her peers at Palo Duro High. They loved pulling practical jokes on one another and Betsy was always known for telling stories in the teacher’s lounge! She referred to her students as “her kids” and she always took great pride in their accomplishments and followed many throughout her life.

Betsy thoroughly enjoyed relationships and people! She served on various committees throughout the years and was a member of the St. Luke Church Choir. Upon retirement, Betsy taught a Women’s Bible Study, and looked forward to her Wednesday afternoon card games with her ladies’ group!

Above all else, Betsy was devoted to her family! She and her husband, David McCampbell, were married just a few weeks shy of 57 years. They had two children, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Betsy lived unconditional love and she truly loved her family’s spouses as if they were her own. As “Gran”, being involved with her grandkids was her greatest enjoyment in life! She always enjoyed attending their events and activities and then bragging on them to her friends as often as possible!

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Elizabeth Koerselman; father and mother-in-law, Howard and Betty McCampbell; and one brother, the Reverend Lewis Koerselman Jr.

She will be remembered by her husband, Ltc. Colonel David McCampbell, Retired; her daughter, Kelly Taylor and husband Sean; her son, Chip McCampbell and wife Rhonda; her grandkids, Jennifer and spouse Kristi, Michael and fiancée Kristen, Katie, Trey David, and Marley; her great-grandkids, Sophia, Callie, and Laila; her one brother, Walt Koerselman and wife Karen; her two sisters-in-law, Debra Consodine and her husband Kevin, and Shannon Jarnigan; and her many nephews and nieces.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the Parkinson Foundation, www.Parkinson.org.

  2. Dear McCampbell Family,
I taught with Betsy at PD for 16 years and I came to love her as did everyone, students and staff alike! Betsy was well known for her wicked sense of humor and quick wit. I’ll never forget one year when time rolled around for our observation/evaluation by the principal someone mentioned that one way to get a poor rating was “using sarcasm with students” . Betsy threw up her hands and declared sarcastically “Well, that’s one thing I would never do with my little angels” That was Betsy! Always getting the last laugh! I loved her and will miss her very much! With deepest condolences,

  3. Yea Betsy!

Blessings to her soul and family from her Classmates of Tulia High School, Class of 1960.

What a treasure Besty was to our class.

    We Love you BETSY!!

  4. David, Chip and Kelly, I am so sorry to hear of Betsy’s departure from this world. I have known Betsy for eons it seems. Her father was our pastor in Tulia, Texas and Betsy was one of our Vacation Bible Teachers. She married David and what a joy that was for her. We reconnected several years ago on Facebook. She added joy, clarification, and love in my life. Betsy was very supportive, and an awesome listener when we spoke about life in general. She loved her family and those gran critters…. always wanting to attend Trey’s baseball games and enjoying the great gran critters as well. I will miss her immensely and her sense of humor which made those Covid days easier to accept. Bless you David. I know you will miss Betsy dearly. God Bless you Chip and Kelly. Love, Juana Whigham Weisz

  5. Betsy and I taught the same students at PALO DURO for over 20 years. She loved our “kids” fiercely and always had their best interests foremost. I loved her as a friend at WT and even more as a colleague. Heaven gained an angel with a wonderful sense of humor.

  6. Gosh, the world won’t be nearly as wonderful without MS. Wonderful, but Heaven will have more joy. Thanks for your friendship thru the years. You brought cheer to all you encountered. God Bless the McCampbell family. David, Chip and Kelly – she loved you guys beyond measure and I heard so many stories about you, I feel related.

  7. I followed Betsy and Walter in Tulia High School. Betsy did her student teaching in English at THS. After her parents passed away, I lost contact with her and David – but often ran across her name while serving on Palo Duro Presbytery Committees. I join with others to celebrate Betsy’ life of service.
