Esther Gay Abel

Esther Gay Abel of Amarillo, Texas passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2022, at the age of 98.

She was born in Hooker, Oklahoma on April 6, 1924, to Ernest Montandon and Maude (Moore) Montandon.

Esther grew up in Hooker, Oklahoma with her parents and siblings Virgil, Edith and Dale moving her junior year to Austin, Texas.

Esther graduated from Austin High School and worked at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin during the war years.

She married her life-long love Dale Burton Abel on August 19, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas. They moved to a farm outside of Baker, Oklahoma and lived there until they moved to a farmstead outside Hooker, Oklahoma in 1954 where they would live for 12 years. After the death of her husband Esther moved to Amarillo, Texas then Oahu, Hawaii returning to Amarillo, Texas in 1998 to be closer to her family.

Esther was a loving “Mother” to her children, “Grandma” to her grandchildren and “Gigi” to her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson.

She had a love for travel and traveled extensively to Hawaii, Japan, Thailand, and Korea. After selling her home in Amarillo she moved to Oahu, Hawaii to enjoy her dream for many years before returning to Amarillo.

She was passionate about her family and loved having the grandchildren over for their spot on the blanket with a big tub of cookies nearby. That love extended to her great-grandchildren and her one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, in 1966; her parents, Ernest, and Maude; and her siblings.

Esther is survived by her children, Carol Ann Applegate and husband David, and Marilyn Gill and her husband Mike; her grandchildren Dale Applegate and wife Dottie, Tracey Seymour and her husband Dave, Jeff Gill and his wife Whitney, Jeanette Lindsey and her husband Brian, and Tina Hedger; and her great-grandchildren, Travis Applegate and wife Paige, Gabby Boswell and husband Tanner, Macey Martinez and her husband Virgilio, Logun Gill, Lauren Gill, Daelyn Hedger, Cortlyn Hedger, Brenna Lindsey and Jaylee Lindsey. She is also survived by her one great-great-grandson, Tucker James Applegate.

Esther leaves a multitude of friends from Summit Apt., and Plum Creek Assisted Living to remember her.

She will be cremated with a family celebration of life at a future date.
