Fidel Martinez Jr., 76, of Amarillo, TX, passed away on Thursday, November 19th, 2020. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Amarillo, TX. Due to covid restrictions, we will be having a private memorial service with immediate family. We ask for your understanding at this time.

Fidel was born on January 19th, 1944, in Tucumcari, NM to Fidel and Rebecca (Grinie) Martinez. He resided in Tucumcari until his late 20’s, when he moved to Albuquerque, NM, where he worked at Rainbow Bread Company until he retired and moved to Amarillo, TX in 2005.

He never knew a stranger. He would strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. He was also very generous to anyone in need, he would give you the shirt off his back. He loved his family deeply. It brought him great joy to be around his son and his family and to be able to visit the rest of his family. He loved going from town to town enjoying different restaurants and spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fidel and Rebecca Martinez; son, Lonnie Eugene Martinez; stepson, Michael Romero; brothers, Rosendo Martinez, Tony Martinez, and Steve Martinez; nephews, Patrick Martinez, Richard Downing, and LeRoy Sena, Jr.; niece, Monica R. Sanchez; and great-nephew, Jace Sandoval.

He is survived by his son, Martin Martinez and wife Cheryl of Amarillo, TX; three stepdaughters, Dolly Romero and Veronica Eggert, both of Amarillo; and Mary Romero of Littlerock, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Ethan Martinez and Mitchell Martinez of Amarillo, TX; sisters, Maria and husband Mike Guenther of Albuquerque, NM, Mary and husband Richard Saunders of Loudon, TN, Helen Downing of Clovis, NM, Cecilia Sena of Tucumcari, NM, and Rose Sandoval of Amarillo, TX; brothers, Frank Martinez and wife Bertha of Farmington, NM, Albert Martinez of Amarillo, TX; and numerous nephews and nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces.

  1. He was a precious person so loving, friendly. We were raised one block from each other so a lot of memories there.

  2. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing, I have fond memories of FIDO when I used to spend summers at his house when my dad lived with him in Albuquerque. My dad David Young and him I’m sure are reminiscing about the good old days as they watch over us.
