Frances Adkins

Frances “Fran” Adkins, 93, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on December 20, 2023.

Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. G. A. Roach officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Fran was born in Wheeler County, Texas to Erma Nora (Smith) Tubbs and David Jasper Tubbs on July 4, 1930. Because of being a July 4th baby, when she was a child, she thought the fireworks and celebrations were for her. As an adult, it was always special to her to share her birthday with the United States.

She married Tommy Joe Adkins on October 8, 1949. They were married 64 years before Tommy passed away. While he was in college, she worked at Southwestern Bell as a switchboard operator. After they started a family, she quit the phone company to be a full-time mom. Once her children were all in school, she went back to work for the phone company in the office. She retired from AT&T

in 1985.

While raising her children, Fran enjoyed an active life. She bowled in a league, played volleyball every chance she got, and would get together with friends to play card games. She sewed many of her daughters’ clothes.

Fran and Tommy retired the same year and bought a fifth wheel. They enjoyed traveling in the camper. They spent most of their summers in Colorado and the winters in south Texas. For many years, they camped at South Fork, Colorado where he played in the band and she taught line dancing. She loved to dance.

Fran always had a smile for everyone and could light up the room with that smile. Even the last few months, when she was in assisted living, she was known for her smile. She could always see the good in everyone. She approached life with a positive attitude. She would always put others before her. At family gatherings, she would make sure everyone was taken care of before doing anything for herself.

Fran was the happiest when she was surrounded by family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought huge smiles to her face. In her eyes, they could do no wrong, and she would spoil them with anything they wanted. Even when they got older, and she no longer saw them often, hearing about what they were doing and seeing pictures of them always brought her joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Tommy Joe, nine sisters, two brothers, and her sweet granddaughter, Tandie.

She is survived by her son, Steve Adkins, and wife, Norma, of Hockley, Tx., her daughter, Debbie Morris, and husband, Jock, from Amarillo, and her daughter, Donna Ficken, and husband, Scot, of Wichita Falls. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be available from 10:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Amarillo.
