Gail E. Hays, a Clinical Social Worker at the Amarillo Veterans Administration Hospital and a longtime resident of Amarillo, TX passed away unexpectedly on December 15, 2019, at the age of 66.

Gail is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, George M Hays, III, her children, Becky Thompson and Brenda Franklin; her grandchildren, Ashton and Lexi Wetendorf, Jacob and Matthew Franklin; She is preceded in death by her mother, Claire Reynolds.

Gail hailed from Big Bear, California and was a proud US Army veteran.  She served 7 years as a medic during the 1970s.  She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1986 with her Master’s degree in Social Work and worked in many different capacities as a Social Worker culminating in her work with veterans at the Amarillo VA for the last 15 years.

Gail was a devoted wife and mother. She was a friend and huge advocate for human rights. She had a love of quilting and often made beautiful pieces for many people. She was a problem-solver who got things done. She was the matriarch of her family. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family and coworkers and all who knew her or came across her path.

A memorial service is pending at the Veterans Services building. We will confirm a January 10th at 2:00 pm time via Facebook.

  1. I just found out about her passing. Im heart broken. This woman fought tooth and nail to save my life in the program at the V.A. She never gave up on me and wouldn’t let me give up on myself. I will forever be grateful for her. My prayers go out to her family
