Gay (Peoples) Cherry, 91, of Amarillo, TX died August 17, 2020.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 21, 2020, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Pastor Scott Higginbotham of Temple Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Gay was born June 16, 1929, in Chickasha, OK to Early and Ada Peoples.  She was one of the first meter maids for Amarillo and was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Gay loved helping others and raising her family.  She also enjoyed Joy Club and was a member of Hand-in-Hand.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Cherry.  She passed away August 17, 2020, their 74th anniversary.

She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Peoples, Ira Peoples, Norman Peoples, and Earl June Peoples; and one sister, Ruthie Carter.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Cherry and wife Carol, Lockney, TX, and Sonny Cherry and wife Donna, of Amarillo; a daughter, Glenda Allen, of Amarillo; grandchildren, Diane Klein and Dana Harris, Nathan and Amie Cherry, John and Diangela Cherry, Angie and Shon Wagner, Amber and Marty Shelton; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Brina, Kaytlyn and Austin, Cheyenne, Mackenzie, Jace, Bryson, Colby, Carter, Madeline, Sophia, and Dani; four great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Waylon, Watson, and Mila; special friends, Lavonda Slaughter, and Norman and Cathy Williamson; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 7:00-8:00 P.M., Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Temple Baptist Church.

  1. Gay was one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met. She was in my mother’s Sunday School class. Her name fit her so well, she was always happy & smiling. I’m praying for her family, Gay is @ home w our father, just where we want to be.

  2. I have always been proud to be related to “Aunt Gay”. She was the perfect example of a strong woman. Always putting her family first. A true embodiment of strength and grace. I’ll miss hearing her stories. She was so kind and loving. A lot of people her missing her right now.

Well 40 something years ago I got to meet You and Your wonderful Family , it started out as We ( Cathy and I ) called You Grandma Gay , Cathy lost Her Mom in 2012 , and I lost My Mom in 2013 , You said call Me Momma Gay after that , which We loved doing, You were the best Momma Gay , We Love You and Miss You , but You will always be in Our hearts and on Our minds , We will see You later in Heaven for a big hug and a I Love You .

  5. Gay was one of the best! We have such fond memories of her when we were in Colorado. Chuck grew up with the Cherry’s and loved being with them. There’s was the most popular house in the neighborhood because of her! She will always have a special place in our hearts.

  9. Grandma Gay left us all with valuable lessons the most important was to have faith in Jesus Christ as our savior I am truley honored to have had her as my grandma for the short time I did I will always love and cherish her and her kind heart

  10. I’ve known you, Grandma Cherry, since Mackenzie and I were in the second grade. You were always so happy when I went over to play with Mackenzie during the weekends and almost every day during the summers. Your grilled cheese sandwiches will always be the best. I’m so glad I was able to have you in my life as well. I’ll miss you, my dearest grandma and your warm, loving, and welcoming hugs.

  14. My dearest Aunt Gay, I will miss you so much–our wonderful visits, your wisdom and the stories of your time in Oklahoma. So, I’ve kept the stories in a file and in my next book you will be featured. You go to be with the others, the role was called up yonder and you had to go. We understand. Until we meet again my thoughts will be with you.
