George Herbert Mitchell, 93, of Dumas, TX died Sunday, January 15, 2023.
Private services will be held. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox Ave.
George was born January 28, 1929, in Abingdon, IL to Adam Gee and Violet (Thurman) Mitchell. He proudly served his country with the US Army.
George married Fern Knox on April 30, 1953. This year would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. After their nuptials, they moved from Illinois to Guymon, OK to work in an alignment and brake business. In June of 1956, they moved to Dumas where he started his own alignment and brake business; Dumas A & B Service, where he retired after 56 years. At that time his son, Steven Mitchell ran the business.
He was an avid traveler. In 1962, he built his first camper and took his family to see all of the 49 states and each province of Canada over the years. He loved to play games, (especially cards and dominos), fish and hunt. He helped start the Moore County Bow and Arrow club in the 80’s. He and his friends also rode across the United States on their motorcycles to all 48 states over the years.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to tell stories and share his knowledge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Gee and Violet Mitchell; sister, Norma Van Liew; son-in-law, Benny Barton; daughter-in-law, Janet Mitchell and great-granddaughters, Diana Barton and Olivia Boxley.
Survivors include his wife, Fern (Knox) Mitchell, of the home; brother-in-law, Warren Van Liew; son, Steven Mitchell, of Dumas; a daughter, Sandra McSpadden and husband, John of Dumas; daughter, Cathy Barton of Bastrop, TX; son, Stacy Mitchell of Dumas; 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many children of the heart.

George was such a wonderful man. I always enjoyed visiting w/ him throughout the years I have gotten to know him. I know he will be missed by many, for sure by me!
George was a really great person. Always enjoyed the camping times we had with him and his family in New Mexico. Our prayers are with Fern and all their family.
