Gerald “Poppa” Reid
Gerald “Poppa” Reid of Amarillo, TX passed away on August 22, 2023 at the age of 90.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Boxwell Brothers. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Gerald was born March 22, 1933 in Altus, OK to David O. Reid and Ruby Isabelle Milton. He moved to Amarillo in 1939 but frequently spent time at the family farm back in Altus. He attended Amarillo High, graduated from Altus High School in 1952, and received his Associates Degree from Amarillo College in 1957.
He married Janette Ramsey in July 1958. In 1962, they had their son David R. Reid.
He joined the Texas National Guard in 1949 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957. He later transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve where he retired after 16 years of military service. He worked as a welder; was employed at TWA and Central Airlines, and delivered milk for Borden’s before starting his career in 1960, for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier where he retired in 2001 after 41 years.
He had several rewarding hobbies over the years that included RC airplanes, amateur radio, small engine mechanics, fixing darn near anything that needed it and being Poppa. Gerald spent 8 years working with the Boy Scouts, became a Mason, and helped coach kid’s baseball teams.
Gerald Reid is survived by his wife Janette; his son David; 3 granddaughters; 7 great-grandchildren; his sister Cathy; and a bunch of young cousins for whom he lovingly served as surrogate grandfather.
