Glenda Simmons Abston, 84, of Amarillo, TX died on Friday, January 15, 2021.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Glenda was born on April 10, 1936, in Vernon, Texas to Johnnie and Leola Simmons. She graduated from Vernon High School in 1954. She met Donald Ray Abston her junior year in high school and they were married on December 29, 1955. She was a devoted Christian wife, mother, mimi, sister, and aunt. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and was happiest when surrounded by family and her many life-long friends.

Glenda was a faithful member of Southwest Church of Christ since 1963. She served in a number of ways including teaching Sunday school, hosting small groups, bible studies, and feeding families and college students. She loved to have company in her home and entertain family and friends. She loved to give.

She was an avid artist who also loved to knit and crochet. Her paintings and afghans can be seen throughout their home and the homes of loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, George Simmons and Terry Simmons.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Ray Abston; two daughters, Karen West and husband Terry, and Kathy Spears and husband Rick; four grandchildren, Drew Spears and wife Heather, Levi West and wife Meagan, Katelyn Hopper and husband Logan, and Jake Spears and wife Bronwyn; five great-grandchildren, Shelby West, Jett Andersen, Rylee West, Brooklynn Spears, and Ellowyn Spears; a sister, Sharon Miles and husband Mike; a brother, Charles Simmons and wife Gail; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the doctors and nurses over the years and BSA Hospital.

The pallbearers for the service will be Drew Spears, Levi West, Jake Spears, Logan Hopper, Tracy Simmons, Travis Cook, and Jett Andersen.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at the funeral home and suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be sent Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch https://www.calfarley.org/waystogive/ or High Plains Children’s Home https://www.hpch.org/giving

  1. Just saw this sad news. Don and Glenda were our bowling partners for several years on the church bowling league in the 80’s. We had “200” dinners with Mike &Judy Bahn’s team when someone would bowl a “200”. Don and Richard were always bowling a “200” and we had many fun dinners. Glenda was such a pleasant person and we all enjoyed being together so much. We are sending our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to the family. Love you all, Richard and Sharon Owens

  2. Kathy and family—oh how my heart hurts for you all. Praying for God to provide all that is needed during this sad journey. Won’t it be wonderful when we meet our moms in Heaven. Will continue prayers for comfort.
