Harold “Lee” Campbell, Jr.

Harold L. “Lee” Campbell Jr., 79, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on March 17, 2024.

Memorial Services will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 23, 2024 in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, with Dr. G. A. Roach as officiant. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Lee was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 14, 1944, to Eva (Meadows) and Harold L. Campbell, Sr. Lee was a graduate of Palo Duro High School, and was a member of the Don’s state runner up basketball team in 1961. He served three years in the United States Army, including a year (1968) in Vietnam. He later earned a Journalism degree from West Texas State University and began a two-decade career as a sportswriter and columnist for the Amarillo Globe News.

Lee was a lifelong lover of cats and would often have one in his lap. He was a music lover, and along with his sister Carol, kept the house full of the newest, exciting sounds of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. He was a devoted Bob Dylan fan, and as he aged preferred what he considered authentic, classic country.

Lee was an avid sports fan, especially of the Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks. Late in his life, he smiled at the notion that we had all lived long enough to see the Rangers win the World Series.

His generous nature, easy going manner, and loving devotion to those he loved will live on with us.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by sister, Carol Jean Campbell; brother, Gary L. Campbell; nephew, Mark MacKay Campbell; niece, Jacey Katharine Campbell; and special family member, Cindy Sympson.
