Harold was born on November 22, 1930, in Benjamin, TX, to Austin Young (Jack) Steen and Myrtle Steen. The youngest of 3 boys, he grew up in Crosbyton, TX, where he got his first job at age 9 in a grocery store. This would be the beginning of an incredible work ethic that would span over his entire life.

In high school, he was known as a “hot shot” because of his exceptional football skills.

At age 17, he obtained a pilot’s license to fly a glider plane. At age 18, he enlisted in the Army of the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper. He completed 58 jumps and was also a boxer. Harold was very close to his older brother, Austin (Bud), who also was in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper.

In 1952, he completed his military service and returned home to Crosbyton, TX. Soon after returning home, he met Joyce Shumaker and they were married on April 6, 1953. He and Joyce moved to Amarillo where Harold supported his family as a stone mason for over 60 years.

Harold loved fishing, boating, camping, and building crafts. He was a kind and generous man who never met a stranger.

Harold was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce Steen, and son, David Steen.

He is survived by his two daughters, Sally Gowens, of Mansfield, TX, and Denna Morelos, of Amarillo, TX; five grandchildren, Jody Gowens, of Arlington, TX, Ricci Hayes and husband Ashley, of Mansfield, TX, Timothy Steen, of Phoenix, AZ, Dallas Steen, of Midland, TX, and Tiffany Craghead and husband Ben, of Amarillo, TX; five great-grandchildren, Kelsi Oran, Richard Hayes, and Emma Hayes, all of Mansfield, TX, and Zaxtyn Craghead and Sienna Craghead, both of Amarillo, TX; one great-great-grandchild, Atlas Oran, of Mansfield, TX; two honorary sons, Raymond (Butch) Miller, of Amarillo, TX, and Mark (Smitty) Blanford, of Amarillo, TX; and beloved dog, Max.
