Howard Wayne Beckner, 83, of Amarillo, TX passed away on September 29, 2023.

A Memorial service will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 6, 2023, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. G. A Roach officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Howard was born in Clayton, New Mexico on January 13, 1940, to Nora and Cecil “Lefty” Beckner. He graduated Clayton High School in 1958 and attended college at New Mexico State for a few years. He drove cattle trucks as a young man and was employed with Coca Cola for 13 years. He then started his own business, Beckner Construction. Howard was a hard worker, nothing made him happier than to have a job to do. He did everything from building homes, full remodels, and bedroom suites to rocking horses and cutting boards. He, along with his parents, built the house he has lived in for 57 years. Even during his most recent hospital stay, he continued to keep his mind sharp by watching wood working videos to pass the time. He was passionate about spending time with his family while snow skiing, camping, going to casinos, fishing and drag races.  He loved following the grandkids around to all their events and even working pit for the grandsons riding dirt bikes. His grandkids lovingly referred to him as ‘Papa Howie’.

He was preceded in death by his mom, Nora and his dad, Lefty, brother Norman Beckner, great-grandson Jules, and two sons-in-law Carl and Tommy.

Survivors include his sister Wilma Black, daughter Kelly and Dane Dodge of Pampa, Texas, son Sterling and Robbie Ann Beckner of Amarillo, Texas, and daughter Stephanie and Duke Sanders of Amarillo, Texas.  His precious eight grandchildren Justin, Amanda, Michael, Coby, Jaeden, Chad, Chyana, and Mason, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M., Thursday, October 5th, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

  1. Even though I haven’t talked to Duke and Stephanie in years,
Even longer since I have talked to my friend from highschool, sterling,, I wanted to send my condolences to the family.
I only met Howard a few times but he treated me with common courtesy even though I was a teenager and I appreciated It.

  2. I just saw this and am so sad. The best neighbor ever! Such a nice nice man, and father to my good friend in elementary school, Stephanie. We use to rip roar our mini bikes by their home 50 times a day and he never said a word, just always smiled and waved at us. Talk about a cool guy, he was the best! I am very sorry for your loss, prayers going up!

  3. My memories of Howard are waaay back when. My brother Tony and I lived directly across the street from the ‘Beckners’ lol, and Howard was always a gracious host anytime I came over, I even got a hug or 2 once upon a time. When he smiled his whole face lit up….Sterling, Stephanie and Kelly all got that remarkable smile of his, how great is that! ❤❤❤

  4. I’m praying for all of you. Howard was one of my cousins and one who always brought a smile to my face. I loved to hear him laugh. My plan is to be at the memorial service and hoping to get there in time for the visitation on Thursday.
    With love & prayers,
    Eileen

  5. Howard was my handyman. He was such a great guy. No job too strange or small. Once he spent 2 hours hanging a wall of pictures as I kept changing how I wanted them arranged. He was always smiling and had a wry sense of humor. I will miss him.
