James Marrion Newberry, 73, of Amarillo, TX passed away on October 30, 2022.

Graveside services will be at 11 A.M., Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, TX. Military rites by Volley’s for Veterans. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

James was born in Phillips, Texas on April 19, 1949, to John Newberry and Thelma Crider. He graduated from Caprock High School. James was an avid coin collector, and loved being outdoors, working in the yard, and planting trees. He was always full of great advice; he loved his grandchildren very much, and to them was known as Opa. He was married to Ruth Newberry on June 5, 1972, in Marietta, Florida. James served his country from 1969 to 1976 in the U.S. Army Infantry 7th Cavalry 1st Cavalry Division.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Newberry and Thelma Newberry, and his wife, Ruth Newberry.

Survivors include children, James Newberry II and wife Kari; sister, Dolly McMeen and husband Pat; twin brother John Newberry and wife Karen; brother Richard Newberry and wife Betty; stepchildren, Petra Allen and husband Glenn, Peter Hattrick; grandchildren, Emily Newberry, James Newberry III; step-grandchildren, Kevin Hart and wife Brittany, Brittany Pinkous and husband Michael, Shannon Huck and husband Daniel, Dennis Hattrick, and Danielle Hattrick; 9 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 step- great-great-grandchildren.

  1. Sad to hear of the passing of my cousin Jim. He and John would come out to Arizona in the summers and stay with us out in Laveen. Lots of great memories. Sad that we didn’t stay in touch in our later years.

  2. I enjoyed working with James. He was always so nice and will be missed by all of our group of retirees from the post office.
