James “Jimmy” Raymond Batenhorst passed away October 9, 2020.  He was born March 1, 1936 in Canyon, TX to Henry John Batenhorst and Veronica Clara Schuele Batenhorst.  He is predeceased by his parents as well as four brothers:  Wilfred, Harold, Joe and Gene.  Survived by his daughter, Jimmie Ann Batenhorst of Levelland; stepson, Tracy Perkins of Wildorado; stepdaughter, Sherry Johnson of Vega; two sisters, Margaret Hammer of Panhandle and Bernadette Spurgeon of Amarillo; two brothers, Henry M. Batenhorst of Hereford and Gerald Batenhorst of Fritch.  Also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and long-time friends.

Jimmy served with distinction in the US Army from Nov 1958-Oct 1960 as a tank operator and achieved sharpshooter status during deployment in Germany.

Beginning at the age of 3, Jimmy rode his first horse and started learning to break horses at the age of 8.  By age 8, he began working after school learning to drive a tractor and plowing perfectly straight rows.  He worked on several local ranches including the Frying Pan before and after serving his country in the Army.  Jimmy started his own herd in 1962 and was an avid quarter horse enthusiast and successful cattleman until the end.

Viewing will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2020.  Rosary will be at 5 p.m. in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel at 2800 Paramount in Amarillo.

Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 22830 Pondaseta Rd in Umbarger, followed immediately by graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Umbarger.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donating to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Umbarger or your favorite charity.

  1. Wow, don’t know where to start. James and I were inducted into the Army together in Amarillo. We sat together on the train to Colorado Springs to process. We went to Ft, Hood for basic training and to Germany and served in the same Platoon. He was my best army buddy. I’ll not forget him. Rest in peace James

  3. I enjoyed getting to know Jim at the bank. He was precious and his sweet dog always waited faithfully in his truck. Prayers for the family!
