Jane Cayton, 89, of Amarillo died Monday, February 8, 2021.

UPDATED SERVICE DATE/TIME

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel in Amarillo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Texas Oncology and Saint Stephen United Methodist Church.

Jane was born in Iraann, Texas on August 13, 1931. In high school, she met her first love, Lynn Leathers.  They married shortly thereafter with Lynn joining the Navy and Jane attending Texas Tech to pursue a degree in education. Tragically, Lynn died unexpectedly upon his return to the states. Jane moved to Amarillo to teach at Alice Landergin, and it was there that she met her second husband, her best friend, and soulmate, Wallie Cayton.  They wed on March 10, 1960, and enjoyed 56 long years of marriage.

Jane was nurturing and selfless. In all capacities of her life – daughter, mother, teacher, friend – Jane lived to inspire and help others.  She adored her two daughters, Kelley and Melanie, and raised them with the same sense of compassion.  Over the thirty years she taught, she loved every single student she ever had and instilled in them that each one had a special purpose in this life.  After she retired, she continued giving back to the community, tutoring adults at the Literacy Fund.  There, she said, she gained a sense of being helpful, being needed, and building true friendships.  In short, she loved unconditionally and in so doing inspired hundreds of thousands of people over her 89 years.

At the forefront of her life was always her family. She was graceful, genuine, kind, and empathetic.  She loved her husband and her children with all her heart and soul.  And her love didn’t stop there. She loved with equal intensity those that her children loved.  She is survived by her beloved daughter, Kelley and her wife Melodie SoRelle, whom she cherished as her own, her beloved brother Jack Johnson, goddaughter Gail Johnson and brother Mark, nephews Billy Ray Haden and wife Lynn, and Jimmy Haden and wife Kym, granddaughter, Ashley, great-grandchildren, Maya and Taya, and several other family members who filled her life.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Wallie, daughter, Melanie, brothers, Jolly and Bob, and parents, Jolly Mincey and Mabel Gray Johnson.

We are especially thankful for Cori Rhea and Penny Holland, who gave such love, friendship, and kindness in care of Jane.  They enabled her to live the life she wanted to live – in her own home — where she was comforted with beautiful memories and dreamed sweet dreams of her beautiful life.

I love you so, Mom. You are my North Star.

  2. To the Cayton Family – I am so terribly saddened for this tremendous loss. Your loved one, Mrs. Cayton, was my second grade teacher and she was absolutely pivotal in my life. After a really difficult first grade year, I was blessed with her as my second grade teacher. From the moment I met her, she made me feel so very special as she welcomed me into her classroom, and into her life, with open arms. I cannot even begin to tell you how thankful I am that the Lord led our paths to meet. I am a lifelong learner and educator which was inspired, largely in part, by Mrs. Cayton. She was a phenomenal woman and her legacy lives on through the many thousands of lives she touched. I am so very thankful to have been blessed by her. Heaven gained a special angel on February 8; however, her memory and her legacy will live on here for countless generations. I pray the Lord will bless you and comfort you in this time of great loss.
