On Friday, September 2nd, 2022, Janet M. Overstreet (aka Grandjan for the past 27 yrs.) accomplished her final goal when she transferred from the Earthly to spiritual plane to join her parents, numerous family members, and friends that have gone before her.

Grandjan was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas, and spent too many hours to count with her mother’s extended hometown family, the Motleys.

She was a proud Amarillo Sandie and cultivated those friendships to the end of her time on Earth.

While attending Amarillo Community College, she met her ultimate partner and the love of her life Curtis, asking a sorority sister to invite him to attend the Howdy Dance with her. That love has lasted for 56+ years as of their anniversary on August 11th, 2022.

After residing a short time in California, while Curtis served in the Navy, they both returned to Amarillo with Chris and Todd, their first two children, shortly adding her third son Brandon to the family.

Grandjan raised her three boys with deep love, a basis in faith, a breath of grace, much patience and when needed a hard line not to be crossed. While wrangling her three boys, she also went back to ACC to finish a degree as a Dental Assistant with top honors and volunteered with the Amarillo Junior League for countless hours…where of course, she met even more lifelong friends.

Grandjan relocated to Austin shortly after her first grandchild was born and within months had more friends in Austin than her children who had lived there for 2 years. She had the ability to make everyone feel welcome and never met a stranger in her new digs while keeping up with the old gang from her childhood and previous adventures.

Then came more grandchildren. She was so proud of them that every person she met would have to take a pause to listen to the story of the latest one born or the accolades of the older ones. A 15-minute stop would turn into meeting new people and a lifetime of phone calls to check in on her new friend to make sure their life was still on track.

In all weather, Grandjan always had a big enough umbrella to cover all that she loved…even if they didn’t think they needed it. That umbrella created unlimited hope and possibilities for everyone she knew and was mounted on a firm foundation in her faith in God and secondarily in her family and friends. She always KNEW that the impossible was in fact possible.

If you knew her, You Know Her!

Grandjan was preceded to her new place by her mother Laverne (Dolly) and father, Edward P. (Peter Rabbit) Madley.

She has now passed her umbrella to her lifelong love and husband William Curtis Overstreet, her children Amanda and Chris Overstreet, Todd Overstreet, and Ann and Brandon Overstreet, her grandchildren Jacob Overstreet and his love Lauren, Katherine Overstreet, Maddie, Gray, Fletcher and Olivia Overstreet, and Savannah, Jax and Lydia Overstreet. We all know she will be watching for all great-grandchildren to come.

Many thanks and many prayers…we love you Grandjan!!!

  1. Jan and Merry Watson and I spent many a day in high school running around together. We were always in trouble with Laverne, Jan’s mother for one reason or another. When Doug Fike called to tell me Jan had moved to her heavenly home, I could see Laverne with her hands on her hips in her bright red hair saying, “Damnit Janet, hurry up”. Jan gave me the nick name of “Froggy” in high school. After leaving Amarillo, I thought I left my name behind. Janet made sure in Austin and in Houston, all my friends knew my name. Thanks to Jan, I have about 50 frogs all over my house…gifts from friends for many hears!! Jan was an angel on earth and her laugh and smile and love will be missed forever. Love and prayers to Curtis, Christopher, Todd and Brandon.

  2. Dear Jan, you will be missed. My prayers go to Curtis and family. She loved you all! Jan enjoyed life and knew how to make friends. She could be a shoppers shopper. I know she’s in Heaven making everyone laugh. That was her special gift from God. Love snd miss you Jan💕 Emily

  5. Jan, you are going to be so missed! We have been best of friends since we were five years old meeting at Wolflin Elementary, continuing on to Stephen F. Austin, graduating from Amarillo High together, and then on to Amarillo College! The friendship didn’t end there, but continued through all these years! What memories we have had! I would have to write a book in order to mention all the our fun times! All the Gal-Pals meeting at your Lake House in Wimberly, Tx. was so much fun…we could never get enough shopping, eating and catching up on grandkids done so we did that every summer! You never met a stranger, and so concerned about everyone! Rest In Peace, my dear friend! Until we see each other again!
