Services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 28, 2023, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery, 2900 S Hayes St. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Joe was born in Dimmitt, Texas on March 31, 1960 to Minnie and Joe Whiteside. Those closest to him would call him Joe-Jeff, J, JJ, Jeff, Jeffry, Jeffro, Blur, or Pops. Joe was a native of Friona, TX, where he grew up and established many long-term friendships that have endured to this day. After graduating from Friona High School, Joe attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where he met his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Gum Whiteside. It was a little-known secret at that point that Joe was quite the athlete. Joe and Carolyn moved to Amarillo, Texas shortly after marriage where they happily remained until his death.

Joe started from humble beginnings, but he worked hard throughout his life, successfully building his company, WCSA, Inc. Joe was the hardest working man known to many of his friends and family; but more importantly, he was also the most loving. He would do anything for anyone. His approach was always “count me in”, never backing down from anything life threw his way. He always stood ready to lead when life presented a challenge. Joe led a life of one that puts love and heart behind all actions. He had an unbelievable ability to see the best in every situation and in everyone. He had an eye for the “silver lining”.

He will be dearly missed by those that knew him and especially by those that loved him. He lived a complete life to be modeled by those that follow. He stared death in the face and said “I’m ready” knowing that he lived a life to the best of his ability, always seeking to make a difference in everything he did and with everyone he met. Joe had many best friends and brothers on this earth; although we can’t list you all in something like this, he’d want you to know that you are loved.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Minnie and Joe; a brother James; and a sister Betty Sue.

Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn; son, Jeremy and wife Mandy; son, Chris and wife Amanda; grandsons, Mason, Xavier, Nathaniel, and granddaughter, Abby; Sisters, Jacqueline Lewis and husband Leonard of Pine Bluff, AR; Sister, Lisa Johnson and husband Richard of Balch Springs, TX; and brothers, Joe-Lynn, Robert, and Terry.

  4. I’m so sad to hear about Joe’s passing. He was the best. I always looked forward to he and Carolyn’s appointments because I knew I would have such a fun time catching up with them. Joe was truly a “character”. He really was larger than life. Sometimes he would pop into our office just to chat and steal some candy! I always knew it was Joe when I heard that booming, distinctive voice from the lobby. I argued with him many times over the years but he always had my full respect. He was such a hard worker and so dedicated to his family and his community. I can’t imagine how sad Carolyn and his family are feeling now. His was a life truly lived to the fullest. I love you Joe, and I’ll miss you.

  10. Thank you friends for your kind words & condolences.

He was bigger than life in case you never met him.

He would not stop trying to do what he could as he had employees & their families depending on him.

He was old school and believed if he shook your hand, he would keep his word to do just what was agreed upon.

Every day he woke up w/ arthritis & exhaustion from giving his all on the previous day, but he would go back to give every ounce of himself every day.

He also made time for his grandchildren who were his pride & joy. They knew he loved them beyond measure. When they had games and events on the weekends, he would be there cheering them on.

He wanted to leave them something to carry on his legacy, if they so chose to do so.

He accomplished that with his company that will carry on into the future.

I always told people that “he always loved to play in the dirt & tear stuff up” so that’s why he became an expert equipment operator.

If only he could have just operated equipment-he was an expert dozer & excavator operator- instead of operating a business as well.

The last few years have been difficult due to COVID & it’s effects but he rose to the challenge by diversifying & focusing on vacuum truck service to continue to operate his company.

He has been the only CDL driver for his company in the last 20 months so he would deliver his trucks to jobs then also be on the job that needed him the most.

He tried to hire drivers, but couldn’t pay the wages plus benefits they wanted.

The few that did sign on after COVID hit quickly discovered that he worked “to hard” & easier jobs were out there, instead.

He’s also worked on jobs providing direction & his labor as it’s been impossible to find people who want to work like he does.

I could go on to describe this guy, but that’s impossible as he was almost super-human with his work ethic.

His attributes were too many to list so I’ll stop trying to explain this person who loved his God, family, friends and me with his entire soul.

I am blessed to have been his best friend, wife and partner for 44 years.

I’m not sure how I can go on without him, but I know in God’s plan, He will provide as He has throughout my life.

God Bless all of you and thank you for your prayers and kind words.

  12. Jeff and I were distant but we were still family the last time I saw him was my Uncle Sam’s funeral. Jeff I’m going to miss you but God gave you your wings for a purpose. To my family I pray that each and every one of you will stay close. I love all of my family and it seems as though they’re all different so that tells me time is winding down, family is so important. So please let’s keep in touch love you all
    RIP JEFF.

  13. My sweet best friend never wanted me to post anything about him, but this is important. Our 44th Anniversary would be March 30 & his 63rd Birthday would be the next day, 3/31. We didn’t quite make it to then.

He was 18 yrs old the day we got married & turned 19 the next day. When he learned we were going to be parents, he quit sports & got a job fixing truck flats in the afternoons after class until we moved to Amarillo after I graduated.

We came to Amarillo, TX w/ $450 & a car so we had no idea what our future would hold. He got a job in excavation construction and worked his way to the top while learning everything possible from the wonderful men at DePauw.

After 23 yrs, he took the leap of faith to start his own company & has given his all trying to survive in a tough business world. He never gave up because he wanted to make me proud. He’s always been my Superman & has taken care of me & raised 2 wonderful sons in the process.

The Good Lord has been by our sides & provided opportunities at every turn to keep us afloat. One could do the math which it would never add up because we were able to do more and even help family along the way. even when we couldn’t afford the extra costs to do so.

The Bible says that God will not ask what kind of house you lived in, but how many did you take in when they needed help. JJ always believed in doing what he could to help others.

My JJ, my best friend for over 44 yrs has prayed for me and our family and been the Spiritual leader of our family from the beginning of our journey together. Now he has been called to be with his Lord who will give him rest and to have him sit at the right hand of his Father, forever. Amen.

    1. Carolyn, i remember when you guys first met, he would talk about at practice. and you always had the glow when you were around him. I loved taking to him with that big Friona Texas accent. JJ was a true man, always good to his word and helpful. Lord knows he will be missed.

  14. JJ will certainly be missed! Over the years we had some wonderful times- most of which was mom’s and kids because JJ was dedicated to growing the business and providing for his family. I do remember him at the boys sporting events cheering on his sons, then grandsons. He loved his family above all. It shows in the fine men his sons and his grandsons are. I know he is looking down from heaven saying “Don’t make a fuss!” That’s the way he was, always putting his family first.

  15. My dearest friend we went to school since we were little till we graduated and we both went to panhandle state u will b dearly missed my friend prayers to all

  16. Before I ever met Joe I knew he was a good man because I know Jeremy and Chris and many people had many wonderful things to say about him. I only met him a few times but, in those few encounters I knew that he was kind, caring, and a fierce family man with a top notch work ethic. I know he will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.

  17. JJ was one of the kindest people I have ever known. I have told so many of how he was always helping others. Even if he was mistreated, he turned the other cheek, and helped those in need.
I am so blessed to have known him. He will be missed.

    1.
