Joe Richard Hendrick, 69, of Amarillo, Texas has gone to be with our Lord and Savior on May 17, 2022, surrounded by his family and loving wife, Terry Nan, by his side. He married Terry Simms on September 7, 1991, in Amarillo, TX. Joe loved to joke that his 30 years with Terry “felt like 30 minutes…..under water.”

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Rd, Amarillo, Texas with Reverend Will Esler officiating. The family would love for those that can to wear Hawaiian attire in honor of Joe. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Joe was born to Greg and Ruth Hendrick in Dalhart, Texas on March 14, 1953. He grew up in Amarillo with his “baby titter, Lonnie Gae,” and attended Caprock High School where he was a cheerleader for two years. Joe went on to Amarillo College and then Texas State Technical Institute. He worked for Pantex as a guard and won multiple awards for marksmanship. He worked at KVII for many years in their creative department where he wrote, filmed, and voiced various commercials until his retirement.

Joe was a gifted man with countless talents and abilities. He was an incredible artist and if you were fortunate to have him draw your caricature, you were one special person. He was a versatile musician and played in several local bands, finishing his career with The Average Joes. He never forgot a joke and was always the hit of the party with his quick wit and humor. Joe loved the Chicago Cubs, crazy socks, and a good Hawaiian shirt. He was active in his yard and called it “working the land.” Joe had a good heart and was accepting of others and a wonderful friend to all. He loved and was very proud of his two children, Jason and Melissa.

Those left to cherish his memory are wife Terry Nan, mother Ruth, sister Gae and husband Dennis, son Jason and wife Delisa, daughter Melissa and husband Deron, grandchildren Chase, Caige and wife Makayla, Macy, Cameron, Connor, Kyson, and KJ, great-granddaughter Layla Ann, and many nieces and nephews, in-laws Sherry, Tim and wife Tonya, Tom and wife Leslie. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Greg Hendrick. He will be greatly missed by his two puppies, Fidget and Dido, who are lost without him.

A special thanks to Dr. Tumula and the entire staff at Texas Oncology, Kindred Hospice and their exceptional team of caregivers, and all of his amazing PCM nurses, especially Joe’s “Precious,” the excellent Kelli Harris. Joe loved you dearly.

Joe left behind a lot of stuff that his wife has no idea what to do with!

The family requests donations in honor of Joe be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, SPCA, Wounded Warrior Project, Texas Oncology PCCF Foundation, or a charity of your choosing.

  1. Such sweet words, thank you everyone. Yes I miss him so much, but I was so blessed to have been his wife for 30 years. And as Joe would say it only feels like 30 minuets under water!!
He was still telling jokes till the end. Dance while you can everyone!
    Thank you all so much!

  2. Prayers for God’s comfort and peace. Joe made KVII a happy place. He was very talented with creating commercials and certainly musical gifts. God be with Terry Nan and family.

  3. Terry Nan, you and your family are in my prayers! Man, Joe could play that harmonica like no one else!!

  4. Joe made all of our musical lives special. Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, he and I played together in Vic Fontana & The Automatics. One of my fondest memories is looking over at him onstage one night, his hair haloed by the red glare of a spotlight, hands and cigarette wrapped around his harmonica and microphone as he gave it his all. “This,” I remember thinking, “is a musician and friend who is a pleasure to know – and one I’ll never forget.”

  5. I am forever grateful for the short amount of time I got to spend with Joe during my brief time in Amarillo (1980-1981). He was fun, talented, HANDSOME, spontaneous. He taught me why listening to Earl Klugh was important in appreciating the naunce of guitar cords.

  6. Oh man, I had no idea he was…..I worked at KVII during the Rolling 7 days. The hat parties, location shoots at Palo Duro and the lake…the lake…now that was funny, especially when the cops showed up lol. You will be missed.

  7. My heartfelt condolences to Joe’s mom Ruth and sister Gae and to all of his loved ones. Joe, your family was our good neighbors during my high school days who have never been forgotten with the highest regard. May your light forever shine. Thank you, Joe! Love Peace Blessings ~ Janie Williams

  8. Working with Joe made going to work a pleasure. I looked forward to his joke of the day and Polynesian Awareness Day. (Wearing a Hawaiian shirt on Fridays) Joe and Buddy were two of the first people I met when I moved to Amarillo and enjoyed their band Fireside Convention, 1975 I think. My heart aches for Terry Nan and the family. You and the musician community have lost one of the good ones. You’ll never be forgotten Joe.

  9. Prayers for Terri Nan and Family!! He will be missed. Great friend and co-worker at Kvii. We had a lot of fun. I remember doing the redneck newscast. Joe was great all I could do is laugh. So much fun!!❤️❤️ And we would always say you better shut it up!

    1. Joe could always make me laugh especially when he did the redneck news. Thanks Margaret for that memory.

  10. I remember Joe from the Channel 7 days and always recognized his voice on voice-overs for ads. And always, always admired his talents as a musician. What a full and talented life. I am so glad his family, kids, grandkids and on down will be able to hear his voice and music, always.

  11. Dear Terry Nan and family, my sincere condolences on Joe’s passing, I bet he left with a joke and a smirk. Joe was one of the truly rare precious beings from god, I was lucky to work with Joe for a while and luckier to have him call me friend. We all should be so lucky to have more Joes in our life.

  12. Thoughts and prayers are with Terry Nan and family. Joe was one of a kind and will be dearly missed. I was fortunate to have worked with him and happy to call him friend. Go RIP Joe 🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼

  13. Gonna miss you, thank you for being such a blessing to me over the last couple years. I love and miss you hot rod…

  14. Joe used to say, “You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning!” Wise words that we’ve tried to adhere to- he would be proud of our accomplishment! We love you Joe and Terry Nan!

    1. Joe was such a special guy who so many were blessed to have in their lives, whether it was every day or even just once-in-a-while, to experience his amazing gifts, his loving heart and fun-filled spirit. Joe was one-of-a-kind and, without a doubt, certainly lived his “Dash” to the fullest. We should all be so lucky. Ruth, Gae, Terry, Melissa, Jason and family, may God bless you and comfort you all as these extremely hard days pass and as time goes on. We love you.
