Joe Wayland McElreath, 84, of Amarillo, TX passed from this life on August 19, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 27, 2021, at Saint Stephen United Methodist Church. Private burial will be at a later time. Funeral arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Joe Wayland McElreath was born in Memphis, TX to Ivan Richard and Winnie Mae Chapman McElreath on January 10, 1937. Wayland graduated from Memphis High School.

On November 22, 1963, he married Edna Earl Gardenhire McElreath. They lived in Borger until 1978 when they moved to Amarillo. Wayland was a salesman all his life working for several companies including Ponca Wholesale, Firehawk Safety Systems, and he had owned the Tom’s Peanut Distributorship for the Texas Panhandle. He was a member of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church and the John Mark Sunday School Class.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Jimmy, Don, and Bennie Dale and his nephew Rodney.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; sons, Richard and wife Jennifer, of Amarillo, TX, and Jimmy and wife Amber, of Frisco, TX; precious grandchildren, Andrew and Elliott, of Amarillo, TX, and Jared, Jacob, and Kaylee, of Frisco, TX; nephews, Bobby and wife Kaye, of Amarillo, TX, and David and wife Kathy of Waco, TX; and niece, Misty and husband Jimmy Messer of Quitaque, TX.

The family wishes to thank all the nurses and staff at BSA hospital, The Arbors, Amarillo Center for Skilled Care, BSA emergency room, Dr. Khaznadar and his staff all of whom assisted in the wonderful care of Joe.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the John Mark Sunday School Class, care of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S. Western, Amarillo, TX, or to your favorite charity.

    Linda will be able to be at the service whereas I am remaining at home and attending on line due to upcoming shoulder surgery. May the Lord richly bless each of you as you remember the good man that Wayland represented. May you remember the good ways he touched not only you but everyone he contacted. God bless you all.

  4. My prayers are with Edna & family. I had the privilege to know Joe-Joe from the gym where I worked. He always told me I was the hardest worker the gym ever had. I could work circles around the rest of the employees. Such a sweet, & good man who will truly be missed!
