John Curtis Coon, age 81 died peacefully in his home in Amarillo, TX on

March 1, 2023.

John was born in Dalhart and raised on the family ranch south of Dumas. In his early 20’s, John went on to work in the family cattle business in the Oklahoma Panhandle.

John was a devoted volunteer at Amarillo’s local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. He shared his quick wit and his faith in Christ as a sponsor of those struggling with addiction. John was an avid outdoorsman from an early age and a student and collector of Southwest artifacts. A lesson on Native American and cowboy culture was a common topic when visiting with John.

John is survived by his wife of 35 years Carole Gattis Coon, his daughters Catherine of Norman Oklahoma, Shannon of Houston Texas, his sons Brent of Sheridan Wyoming, Ralph ‘Wil’ of Selina Texas, his stepdaughters Anya of Austin, Texas, Kristin of Waitsburg, Washington, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A private family burial will take place at Coon Ranch. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gentiva Hospice, Amarillo in Johns name would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I went to elementary school with John. We were good friends. He invited me to his birthday party at the ranch we ent in his parents car a big green Cadillac I loved the party and ride in his car. I wish I had kept up with him but lost touch. My prayers for his family for comfort and good memories

  2. I remember John taking me and Brent fishing and camping on the river in Cimarron Canyon in N.M. Also visited the NRA Whittington Center with them. He took me and Brent to a few rodeos. He would fill a huge travel mug and thermos with ice then pour coffee into them decades before it became trendy. Was fun camping at the Coon Ranch pond and fishing at night.
    To the Coon family. I’m so sorry for your loss. I pray the wonderful memories overtake the pain as soon as possible.

  3. I didn’t personally know Mr. Coon, but I know how dearly loved he was. Our thoughts, love and prayers for God to wraps his family with comfort and peace as they mourn the loss of their precious loved one.
