John Michiel Johnson, “Sonny”, 81, of Amarillo, TX passed away on October 24, 2022.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. – 6:30 P.M., Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 27, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Amarillo.

Johnny was born in Amarillo, TX on January 31, 1941, to John and Feddie Johnson.  He was a proud graduate of the class of 1960 at Amarillo High School and served in the United States Navy before beginning his career as a Conductor for BNSF Railroad where he retired from in 1999.

After his retirement he could be found at Integrity Motors/Country with Integrity where he worked hard to keep everyone in line.  He was a life time member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge where he spent many evenings playing cards and was even know to cut a rug now and then.  He had a great sense of humor, and loved to give everyone a hard time, but he was also a very kindhearted generous quiet man who loved his family and friends with all his heart. Johnny “Sonny” loved the sport of wrestling! Being a former wrestler for AHS is where his passion for the sport began. He passed this legacy down to his son and grandchildren Slater and Spencer. He would always show you his secret moves, mostly illegal ones whether you wanted to know them or not. Wrestling is where his cowboy style grit, determination and fight began. He also loved to collect things especially coins! He also had an amazing passion for old classic cars. You could always find him on Saturday driving his Nomad, Caprice or Mustang to the Donut Stop for coffee with his friends, then to the car lot or a car show.

Johnny ”Sonny” would want each one of you to know! When life gets tough and it will, JUST GET UP and keep moving forward!!

Survivors include his son, John Johnson and wife Sara; daughter, Kim Velasquez and husband Jimmy; grandchildren, Slater Johnson and wife Audrey, Spencer Johnson, Shelbie Ellison, Riley Vientes and spouse Tyler, Rayden Velasquez, and Jacob Velasquez; great-grandson, JM Johnson; and nephews, Kirk Roberts, Sam and Mike Reynolds, JJ and Josh Johnson. He is also survived by his dear friend, Jeannette Lermon.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the VFW-Golding-Meadows VFW Post 1475, 1401 SW 8TH Ave., Amarillo, TX 79124.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Toll, Glenn Ashton, Buddy Burnett, Tino Martinez, Steve Alexander, Jake Slater, and Jerry “Pete” Kern.

  1. Great Man! Truly a man of integrity. In January 1992 I ran into your Dad, he asked if I was really playing college football? I answered “yes”. He told me he was so proud of me for staying in school, and he didn’t think I could make 138 lbs again. That illustration of caring had a profound effect on me then, and to this day. I know my words do not lessen the pain of loss, yet I believe we will all be together again. Until then we will immolate the love Your Dad unconditionally gave every day!
