John Todd McConnell, 75, of Amarillo, TX passed away on July 24, 2022.

Private family services will be held.

John Todd McConnell was born in Atchison, Kansas on October 20, 1946, to Courtney and Margaret McConnell. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1964 and from Emporia State Teacher’s College (now Emporia State University) in 1968 with a teaching degree. He moved to Amarillo and taught math at Caprock High School until his retirement. He then taught part-time at Amarillo College. He enjoyed being an adopted Texan!

John met his wife, Barbara Ann Jennings Jones, through their shared love of golf. They married on May 12, 1989. At that time, he acquired two adult kids and four grandkids that he didn’t quite know what to do with. But he loved being a part of Barbara’s family, and by the time the great-grandkids came along, he was known as Pappy. He enjoyed picking out their birthday presents and watching them play sports, always encouraging them to have fun. He was an avid reader and loved the Hallmark channel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and great-grandson, Blake Pyle.

He is survived by 2 brothers, Steve (Susan), and Dan (DeAnna Hine); a sister, Mary Gerkovich (Terry); a niece, Erin Kelley and family; stepchildren Billy Fred Jones, Jr. (Kathy), and Carrie Broxson (Bruce); 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

  8. John,
You were an “old school” teacher. . You knew what you wanted and demanded that from the students. In math. Thank you for caring about Caprock and it’s students. You definitely were a Longhorn Legend.
Thanks for making me a better teacher!
