Karon Smith, 77, of Amarillo, TX died December 8, 2020, after an extended illness brought on by Covid-19. Karon spent 22 years being a housewife and raising kids before going to work in the medical industry in 1981, serving in multiple office-related roles until her retirement in 2016. Karon also was very proud to have earned her GED in 2013, at age 70.

Karon was born on November 20, 1943, as Karon LaWan Winters to Ray “Pete” Winters & Lelia Faye Winters.

Karon was preceded in death by her father in 1981 and her mother in 2006. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Laura Rhea Powers, a brother, Don Winters, and two great-grandchildren, Jamon and Ray Lee.

Karon married Hugh Cordell in 1959 and they had three sons, Gordon “Scott” Cordell, Ronald (Ronnie) Shane Cordell, & David “Cole” Cordell.
In 1991, Karon went on to marry Roger Smith and added three daughters, Tiffany Shadle, Stacy Oldfield, Christy Cox, and one son, Roger Leslie Smith to her family.

Karon is survived by her spouse, Roger Smith; her children and their spouses, Scott and Marilyn Cordell of Amarillo, TX, Ronnie and Shette Cordell of McKinney, TX, Cole and Tonya Cordell of Canyon, TX, Tiffany Shadle of Albuquerque, NM, Stacy and Greg Oldfield of Amarillo, TX, Christy and Carl Cox of Bonham, TX, and Roger and Jana Smith of Pleasant Hill, MO; her two sisters, Glenda Harkness of Anaheim, CA, and Willene Ratliff and husband Kenneth of Amarillo, TX; and her one brother, Dale Winters of Clyde, TX. She was also blessed with 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Karon loved watching her boys play all sports and she coached cheerleading for Kids Inc. while her former husband Hugh coached the boys in their sports. Then it came time to attend the grandchildren’s sporting events and she and Roger attended almost every game played and loved doing it.

One of Karon’s passions in life was to cook for her family. Nothing made her happier than to have everyone together having family time playing games after one of her famous home-cooked meals. Karon loved her family, which included her ex and ex-in-laws as well as her immediate family. Once you were a part of her family, you were always a part of her family!

Her funeral service will be held this Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Crossroads Country Church in Amarillo, Texas. Brother Bob Miller will be officiating.
