Leslie Travis Rush, 83, of Masterson, died on Wednesday, December 28, 2022.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 2, 2023, at the 14
th
St. Church of Christ with DeWayne Gion and Jerry Dixon officiating. Burial will be at the Dumas Cemetery. Military rites will be by American Legion Post #224. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox.
Leslie Travis Rush was born on October 2, 1939 at his grandparents’ home in Beaver County, OK. He graduated from Borger High School in 1957. He attended Frank Phillips College for a little over a year. He married Sue Nell Lummus on July 3, 1959 in Dumas, TX. He worked at the Texas Highway Department in Borger at that time. They lived in Borger for about two years. They moved to Dumas in 1961 where Travis worked as a carpenter. They had just bought a new house in Dumas when Travis was drafted into the Army in 1963. He took basic training at Ft. Polk, LA. He then went to armor radio mechanic’s school at Ft. Knox, KY. where he graduated at the top of his class. He then was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX. He was in the 2
nd
armored division that went to Germany on “Operation Big Lift”. He was gone for about 23 days. He had just gotten back from Germany when President John Kennedy was killed. He was on guard duty in Texas the night the President was killed November 23, 1963. Travis was on orders to go to Korea. His mother was in really bad health so he asked for a compassionate reassignment but they gave him a hardship discharge in January 1964. He was so thankful. He came back home to Dumas and worked at Shamrock Oil and Gas for a short period of time. They moved to Amarillo in December 1964 where he worked for the Amarillo Fire Dept. until the spring of 1971. He worked as a carpenter on his days off from the Fire Dept. After he quit the Fire Dept. they moved to Masterson and he worked as a carpenter until retirement in 2007. He was a faithful member of the 14
th
St. Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Leslie William Rush and Maggie Margaret Harper Rush; two sisters, Marquetta Joiner and Roe Jean Dixon; and a brother, Jerry Lane Rush.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Rush of Masterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, January 1, 2023 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
