Lloyd was born on November 3, 1923 in Cherry Hill, AR to John Haden Ford and Hettie Mae Harrell Ford. The family moved to New Castle, TX when he was a very young child and this is where grew up and called “home”. Prior to World War 2 Lloyd worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps on projects in Texas. After the United States entered the war, he felt the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October of 1942.  After completing Marine Paratrooper School at Camp Gillespie, California and receiving his wings. He was assigned to K Company, 3rd Battalion, of the 1st Marine Division serving in combat in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. After the war he returned home to Texas. While working in Gruver, Texas in the spring of 1947 he met the love of his life, Billie “Irene” Scroggs.  They were married on July 31st, 1947 in Spearman, TX. They welcomed their first of five children in August of 1948. In 1950 they settled in Amarillo, TX and lived there until they moved to their current home close to Lake Meredith in Fritch, TX in June of 1982.

Lloyd loved his Lord, his wife, his family, and his country and everything he did was for them. He was a craftsman and loved to make things with his hands and give them to his family and friends, such as his kaleidoscopes and wind chimes. Of all the things he made with his hands, he was proudest of his dancing doll and his walking stick. He was an avid sportsman and liked to hunt and fish as often as he could. He and Irene enjoyed camping together and spent much of their early years of retirement traveling around Texas and neighboring states in their camper with her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Al Leach. Lloyd possessed a great sense of humor and had a song, poem, or a witty quote for almost every situation. His quick wit and ability to tell jokes kept his family and friends laughing, even in difficult times.

Lloyd worked tirelessly all his life to provide for his family. He was an early riser and would wake in the morning singing. One of his family’s favorite memories is of Lloyd singing a song he made up called “Bologna and Cheese” to the tune of the song “Bonnie and Clyde” as he made his sandwich for work that day. He retired from ASARCO Copper Refinery in 1987.

He and Irene are members of the Broadway Baptist Church in Fritch, TX.

He was welcomed to his heavenly home by his parents, John and Hettie Ford; his brothers, Harrell and Rufus Ford and his sister, Flora Onstott; his two sons, Carroll Lynn Ford and Harrell Kent Ford; four grandsons; and his best friend and brother-in-law, Albert Hamilton Leach.

He will be greatly missed by Billie Irene, his wife of 72 years; daughter, Cindy Schindler and husband, Robert; son, Jimmy Ford and wife, Ricci; daughter Angie Downs and husband, Jerry; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 5:30 to 7:30 in the evening at the funeral home.
