Lonnie Ueckert

On March 1, Lonnie Ueckert, loving husband, and father, peacefully passed from this world into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Amarillo, TX.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2023, at South Georgia Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Lonnie was born on January 29, 1942 in Abilene, Texas and was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Odelia Ueckert. He grew up in Noodle, Texas where he graduated from Noodle High School in 1961. After high school, he moved to the big city of Lubbock, Texas where he attended and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1965 with a Bachelor’s in Horticultural Science. After college, he started his career in Missouri with the Kansas City Parks Department. He served in the Army Reserves while in Missouri. He made his way back to Texas, moving permanently to Amarillo in 1979 to start a landscaping company. He finished his career working for the Amarillo Parks Department, retiring in 2001.

Lonnie married his wife of 39 years, Mary Reeves, on October 7, 1983. They loved the adventure of traveling together and through the years traveled across almost all of the United States, Southern Canada, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. They would leave on a trip with nothing more than a plan to share a great adventure. They would go where the road took them, exploring faraway places while forging a deep friendship and a forever love. They lived their dreams together, fulfilling more than either could have ever imagined.

Lonnie enjoyed the outdoors and working with his hands on a variety of house and yard projects. It would be hard to count the number of home projects he completed or built for family and friends. He loved serving friends, neighbors and especially his family. He had a knack for fixing stuff and valued hard work, integrity and kindness. He had a gift of wisdom and could create meaningful conversation with anyone he met. His sense of humor could light up a room.

Lonnie was a member of South Georgia Baptist Church where he and Mary attended and served. He loved opportunities to teach Sunday School through the years as well as helping with church projects as he was able. Lonnie loved following Jesus, loved God’s word and was filled with real joy, even as his health declined. He was always willing to help others and looked for any way to bring joy into other people’s lives.

Lonnie is survived by his wife, Mary, his children: Kevin (Lynlee) and Angela (Mark); his six grandchildren: Weston (Haiden), Maelyn (Micah), Caden (Kylie), Aubria, Bethany and Karis; his four great grandchildren: Behr, Brooklyn, Daisy and Jett; brother, Darrell (Dolores) and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Donations can be made in his honor to the chaplaincy ministry of South Georgia Baptist Church.
