Loretta Ruth Madison at 100 years of age passed peacefully from this world into Heaven on Tuesday, July 21, 2020.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2020, in the chapel at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors located at 2800 Paramount Blvd.  Burial will be private.

Ruth was born March 10, 1920 in Rotan, TX to Lula Belle and Leonard Thomas.  She graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Wayland College in Plainview, TX.  As a young woman she relocated to Amarillo where she was employed by Phillips Petroleum before marrying Dick Madison on December 18, 1954.  They were married 58 years until Dick passed away April 15, 2013.

They were both active members of First Baptist Church where Ruth served as Director of 2nd grade Sunday School for 45 years.

Ruth and Dick adopted two children.  Mark Madison who is deceased and Kerry Jo Madison who resides in Amarillo, TX.  Ruth was an excellent mother who was heavily involved in raising her children. She devoted countless hours tutoring Mark who struggled with dyslexia.

Her hobbies included reading and gardening. She was always reading 2 or 3 books at the same time and everyone thought she had the prettiest yard on the block.

She volunteered over the years at Faith City Mission and served on their board for a time. Her passion late in life was the prison ministry.  She graded weekly Bible studies for Write-Way Ministries for many years.

Jesus said in John 3:3, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” We know Ruth is seeing the kingdom of God because she was born again July 20, 1963.

Instead of flowers, the family strongly suggests memorials be sent to Gideon’s International, P O Box 2304, Amarillo, TX 79105.

  1. She was my best friend; my counselor, my prayer partner, my joy, my confessor and my “fun.” Oh, how I will miss her! “I love you more!!”

  2. Mrs. Madison has a very special place in my heart. There are not many Sunday School teachers that I remember, but she is one of them. Her legacy continues as I teach my children all the Books of the Bible just as she encouraged her 2nd graders. She will never be forgotten.

  3. Thank you Ruth for being such a dear friend. I love you very much and will miss our sweet visits especially about Jesus. See you someday around the throne of God. Dottie

  5. We first met Ruth on her 99th Birthday Day and last saw her at her 100th birthday celebration. In the few months since our first meeting, we mutually adopted each other as family. We will remember her as a caring and thoughtful person, while young at heart. She was one of the very best at good conversation and letter writing. Her memory of past conversations was outstanding, because she was so good at listening to you. We will miss her greatly. Rest in peace sweet Ruth.

  6. The first time I met Ruth was at my brothers engagement party. It was at Percy’s house at the lake. I remember seeing her and thinking she was so classy and stately. She talked to me that night and made me feel important and welcome. . A couple of months later, when my brother got married, my sister was crying. Ruth wiped her tears and promised us that we would love Brenda. Truer words were never spoken! We adored Brenda!! We are grateful for the connection that brought us together. Thank you, Ruth, for your love, encouragement toward our family, and thank you for your hospitality and humor. We are all going to miss you!
