Lucila Cruz Alonzo
Lucila Cruz Alonzo, 88, of Amarillo, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, August 8, 2022.
Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1210 E 11th, Amarillo, Texas, with Reverend Jose Gomez as celebrant. Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Lucila was born on December 13, 1933, in Amarillo, Texas to Lucas and Rafaela Cruz. Lucila “The Girl Next Door” married Dolores “Lolo” Alonzo on July 11, 1956, and they were married for 52 years.
Lucila enjoyed the weekly family Sunday dinners, cooking, sewing making countless dresses for her daughters and granddaughter as well as caring for her extended family. Her family learned early they had to have thick skin because she always had to have the last word or laugh.
Lucila was a second-generation Corte Guadalupana Member, where she held offices as President, Treasurer, and Vice-Treasurer. She was also involved in the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and Church Women United. Lucila attended numerous National Council of Catholic Women Conventions, taught Religious Education, and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Lucila and her late husband were Grand Marshals of Las Fiestas de Amarillo in 1997.
Lucila was a fun-loving cheerleader to her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan of the New York Yankees, Caprock Longhorns, Texas Longhorns, and Dallas Cowboys. She was a band booster for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren following them in their numerous band competitions.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dolores “Lolo” Alonzo; son-in-law, Marcus Evans; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters.
Survivors include her daughters, Gloria Carlile and husband Leonard, Carolyn Meza and husband Sam, and Sylvia Alonzo-Evans, all of Amarillo; grandchildren, Joseph Meza and wife Nicole, Tiffany Carlile and companion Coreene Martin, and Mark Meza; great-grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Gabriella and Christina Meza all of Amarillo; two sisters, Carmen Flores, of Montclair, California, and Amalia Hernandez, of Apex, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a Special Thanks to the Doctors and Staff of Texas Oncology, BSA Wound Care, High Plains Senior Care, and BSA Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1210 E 11th, Amarillo, Texas 79102 in memory of Lucila Alonzo.
Lucila’s final words were to remain close, Love each other and to always remember “I Love You a Bushel and a Peck and a Hug Around the Neck”.
