On Sunday, September 12, 2021, Margaret Ann Powell Thomas went peacefully into the arms of Jesus at age 84 after a short battle with cancer.
The family will receive guests for visitation at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Dumas, Tx, 500 N. Maddox Ave, on Thursday, September 16 from 6-8 pm. The celebration of life service will be held at First Street Church in Dumas at 3:00 pm on Friday, September 17 with a graveside to follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
Margaret was born on January 8, 1937, in Plainview, TX to A.W. and Doris Jean Payne. On October 3, 1954, she married Jack Powell. Jack and Margaret were married for 44 years until his passing in 1999. Together they raised 2 daughters, Teresa and Tammy. She also played a huge role in raising her 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and many of her 8 great grandchildren.
Later in life, Margaret was blessed to marry Louis Thomas of Washburn, TX. Louis and his family immediately joined as one family with Margaret’s family.
Margaret served as a church secretary at First Street Church of Christ and many years at Dalhart Federal Savings and Loan in Dumas. She was also a member of First Baptist Church Amarillo.
Margaret would have been the first to tell you that she lived a blessed life. The absolute most important thing to her was her relationship with Jesus. She loved him passionately and lived every day to serve God. She was also passionate about serving and loving others, especially her family. She spent a significant portion of her adult life caring for others, especially her family. She cared for her parents as they aged, she cared for her grandchildren and even her great-grandchildren. She always put others and their needs before her own. She was the most selfless woman.
Margaret was preceded in death by husband Jack Powell of Dumas, daughter Teresa Murray of Fritch, her parents, A.W. and Doris Payne, brothers Billy Don Payne and Charles Payne, husband Louis Thomas of Washburn, and step-daughter-in-law Shirley Thomas.
Margaret is survived by daughter Tammy Payne and husband James of Kingsland,TX; grandchildren Josh Payne (Brooke) of Ft. Worth,TX, Amber Burt (Jay) of Spicewood, TX, Andrew Payne (Brittany) of Roanoke, TX, granddaughter Mandi; as well as 8 great-grandchildren, Emma, Austyn, Annemarie, Nolan, Evelyn, Garrett, Logan, and Jack; brother Ralph Payne; her favorite aunt, Imogene Kelly; her lifelong best friend, Yvonne Pirkle; stepsons Jim Thomas (Mary Ann), Mickey Thomas (Jana), and Tony Thomas (Sandy); step-grandchildren Joni Burr, Scott Thomas, James Thomas, Holly Denny, Trev Thomas, Heather Thomas, Cara Klaus; as well as 10 step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ.
