Marie Ilene Bass Newberg, 85, of Amarillo died on October 10, 2021.

The family will host a time for visitation on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Boxwell Funeral Home. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo, TX.
Marie was born May 15, 1936 in Carlsbad, NM, the third of five children, to Clem and Dorothy Bass. She grew up in Carlsbad and enjoyed spending time with her church youth group and school friends. Marie loved to sing and music was always a big part of her life.
After high school, Marie attended Carlsbad Community College, and later Abilene Christian College. Her claim to fame in college was that her roommate was engaged to Buddy Holly. Around 1956, Marie moved to Dallas and worked at Ling-Timco-Vaught as a secretary. While living in Dallas, she met the love of her life on a blind date through mutual friends. She and Roy dated for two years before marrying in Carlsbad on November 25, 1960. After they married, Roy and Marie lived in Denton and Marie continued working at Ling-Timco-Vaught while Roy attended college. Over the next few years, they moved from Denton to Albuquerque to Shiprock to Nespelium, Washington before settling in Farmington, NM, where they lived for 27 years. They returned to Carlsbad for a few years, then moved to Amarillo in 2008, where Marie lived until her death.
No matter where they lived, her church family was a priority for Marie. She loved Jesus and serving her church was one way she lived her faith. She served as the church secretary in Farmington for many years, hosted many traveling preachers and singing groups in their home, taught many Bible classes and studies, often served with Meals on Wheels, and sang in countless weddings and funerals. She also attended Higher Ground for many years. Most recently while at Southwest, she helped with the Single Moms ministry, the Family Service Center, and Seniors Praying for Seniors. Marie touched so many lives and was well loved by everyone. She was truly a light for Jesus.
We can’t talk about Marie without mentioning how much she loved playing cards. She was always up for a good game of Liverpool Rummy, Hand and Foot, or Bridge. She was an excellent card player and frequently won. Coincidentally, she also usually kept score.
Marie loved all her names and what they represented. “Wife” (this is what Roy called her), Mom, and Grandma was what she was called by her family who cherished her so much. Marie is survived by her husband Roy; a daughter Kayla Wimberley and husband John of Amarillo, TX; a son Eric Newberg and wife Kristine of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Isaac Wimberley and wife Kayla of Lubbock, TX; Meredith Tanner and husband Blake of Temple, TX; Lauren Strickland and husband Dave of Lubbock, TX; Tanna Giles and husband Blake of Charlotte, NC; Bradyn Newberg of Edmond, OK; great-grandchildren Sawyer and Asher Wimberley, and Oliver Strickland; sister Greta Coalson and husband Connie; and brother Ronnie Bass and wife Nell; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her brother Tommy Bass and wife Shirley, and brother Clem Bass and wife Lore.
The family suggests memorials be made to High Plains Children’s Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114.
